Single-Stage Prediction Models Do Not Explain the Magnitude of Syntactic Disambiguation Difficulty

Marten van Schijndel et al.

Summary: Disambiguating a syntactically ambiguous sentence in favor of a less preferred parse can result in slower reading, known as the garden-path effect. Recent proposals suggest that this effect can be attributed to surprise in a fully parallel parser, rather than involving reanalysis mechanisms. However, while surprise successfully predicted the presence of garden-path effects, it significantly underestimated their magnitude.
