The Chemical Origins of Plasma Contraction and Thermalization in CO2 Microwave Discharges

A. W. van de Steeg et al.

Summary: Thermalization of electron and gas temperature in CO2 microwave plasma is revealed for the first time through Thomson scattering measurements. The results contradict the prevailing understanding of increasing electron temperature causing discharge contraction. The study demonstrates that associative ionization of radicals plays a significant role in the thermalization process of the plasma, providing a basis for ab initio prediction of power concentration in plasma reactors.

Hybrid approach to accurate modeling of coupled vibrational-chemical kinetics in carbon dioxide

A. Kosareva et al.

Summary: A new hybrid approach to modeling coupled vibrational and chemical kinetics in CO2 and its decomposition products is proposed in this study. The model considers multiple relaxation mechanisms and state-specific dissociation and exchange reactions, and distinguishes vibrational temperatures of all CO2 modes and diatomic species. The new model shows good accuracy and acceptable numerical efficiency compared to traditional approaches.

Fast gas heating and kinetics of electronically excited states in a nanosecond capillary discharge in CO2

G. Pokrovskiy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fast gas heating in a pulsed nanosecond capillary discharge in pure CO2 under the conditions of high specific deposited energy and high reduced electric fields. Experimental measurements of specific deposited energy, reduced electric field, and gas temperature as functions of time are conducted. The radial distribution of the electron density is analyzed experimentally. Numerical modeling in the framework of 1D axial approximation is used to analyze the quenching effect of excited atoms and molecules, leading to heat release at a sub-microsecond time scale.

Effect of oxygen atoms on the vibrational kinetics of CO2 and CO revealed by the use of a large surface area material

A. S. Morillo-Candas et al.

Summary: The study shows that a larger specific surface area leads to a significant increase in vibrational excitation of CO2 and CO due to low O atom density, indicating that atomic oxygen is a strong quencher of the vibrations of both species. Additionally, the use of large specific surfaces does not necessarily result in lower vibrational excitation as previously expected. The results also demonstrate that large surfaces, catalytic or not, may have a notable impact on plasma kinetics by affecting the recombination of gas phase species.

Thermal instability and volume contraction in a pulsed microwave N2 plasma at sub-atmospheric pressure

Sean Kelly et al.

Summary: The study focused on the evolution of an isolated pulsed plasma in a vortex flow stabilised microwave discharge in N-2 at 25 mbar, highlighting the role of thermal-ionisation instability and electron energy distribution in N-2 conversion. Thermal instability onset was found to be driven by vibrational excitation pathways, leading to increased N-2 dissociation. Post instability, the discharge contracted radially to the skin depth, while axial elongation was temporarily compressed. Power reflection increased during thermal instability onset, limiting the destabilising effects of exothermic electronically excited N-2 quenching. Translational and vibrational temperature reached quasi-non-equilibrium post-discharge contraction, with translational temperatures reaching approximately 1200 K and vibrational temperatures near equilibrium with electron energy.

Advances in non-equilibrium CO2 plasma kinetics: a theoretical and experimental review

Lucia Daniela Pietanza et al.

Summary: This review article provides a synthesis of the current knowledge on the physical chemistry of cold CO2 plasmas, emphasizing the importance of modeling approaches and experimental data in elucidating the complex couplings in CO2 plasmas. The paper also highlights the need for self-consistent calculations and the latest global models to study the complex chemistry of CO2 and its dissociation products. Additionally, important points regarding the role of surfaces in contact with plasma and the necessity of 2D/3D models for capturing main features of complex reactor geometries are discussed for applications using CO2-containing plasma.
