Insights to improve the plant nutrient transport by CRISPR/Cas system

Stanislaus Antony Ceasar et al.

Summary: Improving food production to meet the growing world population in a changing climate is crucial. Nutrient deficiency in soils is a major bottleneck for crop production. Understanding nutrient transport mechanisms can enhance crop nutrient use efficiency and promote sustainable agriculture. This review discusses the key nutrient transporters and explores the potential of CRISPR/Cas system for improving nutrient transport in plants. Utilizing CRISPR-based engineering can lead to non-transgenic crops with better nutrient use-efficiency, reducing the reliance on synthetic fertilizers and strengthening food and nutrient security.

Finger Millet (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn): Nutritional Importance and Nutrient Transporters

Theivanayagam Maharajan et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the importance of finger millet as a nutrient-rich cereal crop, highlighting the presence of various nutrients and providing key information on nutrient transporters. Through genome sequence analysis and comparison, the study identifies mineral nutrient transporters in finger millet and analyzes their phylogenetic relationship with other plants. Additionally, the study examines the functional residues of the transporters through homology modeling and multiple sequence alignment. This research lays the foundation for further studies on nutrient transporters and the improvement of nutrient transport in finger millet and other cereals in order to ensure food and nutrient security in developing countries in Asia and Africa.

The role of millets in attaining United Nation's sustainable developmental goals

Stanislaus Antony Ceasar et al.

Summary: Strengthening food and nutrient security is crucial for feeding the growing world population. Millets provide energy and nutrients for millions of poor people in low- and middle-income countries, requiring less fertilizer and pesticide compared to mainstream cereals while possessing excellent climate resilience properties. Promoting millets can contribute to achieving the United Nations' sustainable developmental goals.

Management of phosphorus nutrient amid climate change for sustainable agriculture

Theivanayagam Maharajan et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is essential for plant growth and development, but limited phosphate rock resources and climate change present challenges in nutrient management. Fluctuations in temperature, pH, drought, and elevated CO2 affect the availability, acquisition, and translocation of P in plants.

Interaction Between Macro- and Micro-Nutrients in Plants

Suresh Kumar et al.

Summary: Nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) are essential for the optimal growth, development, and productivity of plants. Plant responses to deficiencies of these nutrients are mainly studied separately, but there is limited research on the molecular basis of interactions among them. Recent advances have identified master regulators like phosphate starvation response 1 (PHR1) and light-responsive transcription factors involved in coordinating nutrient responses in plants. Understanding the interactions between macro- and micro-nutrients could help breeders improve nutrient use efficiency and crop yield/quality, especially in the face of changing climatic conditions.

De novo genome assembly of a foxtail millet cultivar Huagu11 uncovered the genetic difference to the cultivar Yugu1, and the genetic mechanism of imazethapyr tolerance

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is the second most widely planted millet species in the world and serves as an important model grain crop for studying C4 photosynthesis and abiotic stress tolerance. This study reports a high-quality whole-genome of a new cultivar, Huagu11, which shows high genomic continuity compared to other millet genomes. Intraspecies comparison between Huagu11 and Yugu1 revealed genetic variations and the Ser-626-Aln substitution in the AHAS gene associated with imazethapyr tolerance in Huagu11. This improved reference genome of Setaria italica will facilitate genomic studies and cultivar improvement for this species.
