Biodiversity alleviates the decrease of grassland multifunctionality under grazing disturbance: A global meta-analysis

Ruiyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The research shows that biodiversity plays a key role in mediating ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) in response to intensifying grazing disturbance. The decrease in EMF induced by grazing is alleviated at high levels of plant diversity, and linearly increases with changes in plant diversity. Furthermore, longer grazing duration and more arid climates exacerbate the decrease in EMF caused by grazing.

Direct and indirect effects of nitrogen enrichment and grazing on grassland productivity through intraspecific trait variability

Shuxia Zheng et al.

Summary: The study found that nitrogen enrichment significantly increased intra-specific trait variability in plant functional traits in the Inner Mongolia steppe, playing an important role in maintaining species diversity and primary productivity. Intra-specific trait variation was positively correlated with ANPP, contributing to the maintenance of grassland productivity, while grazing had an indirect negative effect on ANPP mainly through species richness and interspecific trait variation.

Different effects of sheep excrement type and supply level on plant and soil C:N:P stoichiometry in a typical steppe on the loess plateau

Lan Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed that different types of excrement (urine, dung, and mixtures) have varying effects on the C:N:P stoichiometry of plants and soil. While mixtures increased aboveground biomass, they also led to higher soil nutrient accumulations compared to urine and dung alone.

Sheep Trampling Modifies Soil and Plant C:N:P Stoichiometry in a Typical Steppe of the Loess Plateau

Lan Li et al.

Summary: Herbivores play a role in regulating nutrient cycling of terrestrial ecosystems through trampling, selective foraging, and excretion. However, the effects of trampling on soil-plant interactions and stoichiometry are complex and vary between soil and plants. Research suggests that at certain stocking rates, trampling may not have negative impacts on soil-plant interactions in grasslands.

A consumer-driven recycling theory for the impact of large herbivores on terrestrial ecosystem stoichiometry

Tanguy Daufresne

Summary: The study reveals that herbivores can influence ecosystem stoichiometry in terrestrial ecosystems through direct and indirect controls of ecosystem inputs and losses, in a more complex way than predicted by classic theories. Their impact is independent of their own stoichiometric ratios and may vary between different ecosystem types.

Livestock grazing promotes ecosystem multifunctionality of a coastal salt marsh

Pei Zhang et al.

Summary: Livestock grazing generally enhances ecosystem multifunctionality in salt marshes, with a stronger impact in the middle marshes than in the high ones. Despite some indicators decreasing under grazing, activities of soil microbes and nematodes, soil nitrogen pool, nitrogen mineralization, decomposition, and soil respiration all increased.

Soil abiotic properties and plant functional diversity co-regulate the impacts of nitrogen addition on ecosystem multifunctionality in an alpine meadow

Xiaochen Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that nitrogen addition decreased aboveground plant functions while increasing soil microbial functions and ecosystem multifunctionality. Soil dissolved organic carbon and community weighted mean for plant traits were identified as important factors driving aboveground plant functions, while soil nitrogen and functional dispersion were key factors affecting soil microbial functions and ecosystem multifunctionality.

Diversity of plant and soil microbes mediates the response of ecosystem multifunctionality to grazing disturbance

Ruiyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing grazing intensity significantly reduced ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) and most individual ecosystem functions, as well as the diversity of plants and microbes. Plant diversity played a more important role in mediating the response of EMF to grazing disturbance, compared to soil microbial diversity.
