The History of Botrytis Taxonomy, the Rise of Phylogenetics, and Implications for Species Recognition

Andrea R. Garfinkel

Summary: Botrytis is an ancient, well-studied, and economically important fungal genus. Through the use of phylogenetic tools, a taxonomic revolution is currently taking place, with a significant increase in putative species and the likelihood of more discoveries in the future. The implementation of phylogenetic species recognition concepts is providing greater resolution on the relatedness among species and overcoming issues in historical species recognition.

Quantitative interactions: the disease outcome of Botrytis cinerea across the plant kingdom

Celine Caseys et al.

Summary: The interaction between Botrytis cinerea and its diverse hosts is largely determined by variations in host resistance or pathogen virulence, with specific interactions accounting for a portion of the disease outcome. The disease outcomes cluster among genotypes of a species but are independent of host relatedness. Generalist strains of B. cinerea are predominant, suggesting that specialization may occur through a loss of virulence on most hosts rather than an increase on a specific host.

Population Genetic Analyses of Botrytis cinerea Isolates From Michigan Vineyards Using a High-Throughput Marker System Approach

Rachel P. Naegele et al.

Summary: As sequencing costs decrease, new tools for assessing pathogen diversity and population structure are being developed. Different marker types offer varying levels of sample evaluation, with traditional markers such as microsatellites being more cost-effective for smaller populations.

Genetic Diversity of Botrytis cinerea Revealed by Multilocus Sequencing, and Identification of B. cinerea Populations Showing Genetic Isolation and Distinct Host Adaptation

Cecilia Plesken et al.

Summary: Botrytis cinerea, a plant pathogen causing gray mold rot on various crops, was studied using a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme to evaluate genetic diversity. Through MLST analysis, high-resolution strain differentiation and robust species separation were achieved. The study revealed unknown populations of B. cinerea and genetically distinct strains on Iris pseudacorus.

Organic Farming Lessens Reliance on Pesticides and Promotes Public Health by Lowering Dietary Risks

Charles Benbrook et al.

Summary: Organic agriculture relies on prevention and natural processes to control pests with limited pesticide use, lowering the risk of pesticide exposure. Biopesticides are commonly used in organic production, significantly reducing the risks associated with pesticide dietary exposure, especially in fruits and vegetables.
