A new Cannabis genome assembly associates elevated cannabidiol (CBD) with hemp introgressed into marijuana

Christopher J. Grassa et al.

Summary: The study found that CBD-type cannabis primarily expresses cannabidiolic acid synthase (CBDAS), while cannabis strains with a balanced THC:CBD ratio express both CBDAS and THCAS. Cannabinoid synthase genes are arranged in tandem structure and embedded within long terminal repeat retrotransposons on chromosome 7.

Economic perspective of ethanol and biodiesel coproduction from industrial hemp

Mothi Bharath Viswanathan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the economics of producing biofuels from an industrial hemp genotype, finding that increasing the lipid content in hemp can lead to higher biodiesel production and lower production costs. The simulation results showed that hemp with 10% lipids can achieve a comparable biodiesel unit production cost to soybean biodiesel, with the potential for cost reduction with lower hemp feedstock costs. Additionally, industrial hemp is capable of producing more total biofuels per hectare of agricultural land than soybean.

Quantitative trait loci controlling agronomic and biochemical traits in Cannabis sativa

Patrick Woods et al.

Summary: Researchers investigated the genetic basis of complex traits in hemp by developing an F2 population and identifying 69 loci associated with agronomic and biochemical trait variation. They found that most QTL co-localized, indicating that phenotypic distinctions between different hemp cultivars are controlled by a small number of loci. Additionally, candidate genes TINY and olivetol synthase were identified and functionally validated to have an impact on these traits. This study contributes to modernizing the genomic understanding of complex traits in hemp.

Large-scale whole-genome resequencing unravels the domestication history of Cannabis sativa

Guangpeng Ren et al.

Summary: The study reveals the domestication history of Cannabis sativa, indicating that it was first domesticated in early Neolithic times in East Asia, and that both hemp and drug cultivars diverged from an ancestral gene pool in China. Candidate genes associated with traits differentiating hemp and drug cultivars were identified, as well as evidence for loss of function of genes involved in cannabinoid synthesis during selection.

The biosynthesis of the cannabinoids

M. Nazir Tahir et al.

Summary: Cannabis has played a crucial role in Eurasian civilization for thousands of years, but limited research has been done due to a century of prohibition. With increasing legalization, scientists are now focusing on studying the pharmacopeia of cannabinoids and understanding their biosynthesis to engineer strains with specific cannabinoid profiles. Although there are still gaps in our knowledge about the biosynthesis of cannabinoids, particularly for minor components, this review highlights the tools and approaches that will be used to improve understanding and access to these potentially medically relevant materials.
