Viscoelastic liquid bridge breakup and liquid transfer between two surfaces

Summary: Experimental study on the breakup of liquid bridges composed of aqueous Poly(acrylic acid) solutions reveals that for polymer concentrations exceeding a threshold, the contact line on the surface with the highest receding contact angle fully retracts before the liquid bridge capillary breakup occurs, causing the liquid to remain on the opposing surface. This behavior is attributed to the competition between thinning of the bridge neck and receding of the contact line on the surface with lower receding contact angle.

Statics and dynamics of a viscous ligament drawn out of a pure-liquid bath

Summary: This paper investigates the statics and dynamics of large viscosity ligaments drawn from a pure liquid bath attached to a rod. A one-dimensional model is used to describe the drawing process, with the entire lifetime of the ligament drawing sequenced into stages of ductility, capillarity, and pinch-off. The breakup height and entrained liquid volume predictions from the model align quantitatively with experimental results for silicone oil ligaments.
