Investigation of thermal-hydro-mechanical coupled fracture propagation considering rock damage

Kaituo Jiao et al.

Summary: Rock damage has a significant influence on the thermal-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupled fracture propagation. A pore-scale THM coupling model is developed to study the synergistic effect of injected temperature difference and rock damage on shale fracture propagation. The model calculates the exchanged THM information and fluid conductivity accurately based on fracture and rock damage. It is found that the generation of branched cracks is closely related to temperature response frontier and the single bond failure increases with higher critical fracture energy (CFE). Hydraulic fracturing is more pronounced in low CFE while thermal fracturing shows the opposite trend. The fluid conductivity of fractured rock increases with higher injected temperature difference, but it weakens when rock damage is significant. Branched cracks propagating to adjacent layers are more difficult to form when the layer has significant rock damage.

Numerical simulation of elliptical particles sedimentation in power-law fluid using the improved smoothed profile-lattice Boltzmann method

Hamideh Rouhani Tazangi et al.

Summary: This study numerically simulated the sedimentation behavior of elliptical particles in power-law fluids using the iSPM-LBM method. The effects of different parameters of the elliptical particles on flow patterns were considered, showing that decreasing the power-law index and increasing the aspect ratio and density ratio destabilized the particles. The results were compared with previous works on Newtonian fluids, demonstrating good agreement.

Motion and equilibrium position of elliptical and rectangular particles in a channel flow of a power-law fluid

Xiao Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, the inertial migration of elliptical and rectangular particles in a channel flow of a power-law fluid was investigated using the lattice Boltzmann method. The effects of power-law index, particle shape, particle aspect ratio, blockage ratio, and Reynolds number on particle trajectory and equilibrium position were discussed. The results showed that particle shape and fluid type play a significant role in determining the equilibrium position and trajectory of particles in the flow.

Simulation of particles settling in power-law fluids by combined lattice Boltzmann-smoothed profile methods

Hamideh Rouhani Tazangi et al.

Summary: This study simulated the settling process of two circular particles under different fluid conditions using lattice Boltzmann-smoothed profile methods, investigating the effects of different particle diameter ratios and non-Newtonian fluid behaviors. The results demonstrated that non-identical particles were more easily separated, and the behavior was altered under non-Newtonian fluid conditions.
