Wall-resolved and wall-modelled large-eddy simulation of plane Couette flow

W. Cheng et al.

Summary: We describe wall-resolved and wall-modelled large-eddy simulation of plane Couette flow. The presence of approximately spanwise periodic sets of streamwise rolls is observed in all simulations. Mean streamwise velocity profiles show substantial spanwise variation but collapse well when normalized by local skin-friction velocities. Similar collapse is found for streamwise turbulent intensities. The mean-flow roll energy and circulation decrease monotonically with increasing Reynolds number.

Predictions of Reynolds and Nusselt numbers in turbulent convection using machine-learning models

Shashwat Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: A multivariate regression model and a neural network model were developed in this paper to predict the Reynolds number and Nusselt number in turbulent thermal convection. By comparing with earlier models, it was found that the machine-learning models in this work provided the best match with the experimental and numerical results.

Direct data-driven forecast of local turbulent heat flux in Rayleigh-Benard convection

Sandeep Pandey et al.

Summary: In this study, a combined convolutional autoencoder-recurrent neural network model is proposed to analyze and forecast the dynamics and low-order statistics of local convective heat flux in a two-dimensional turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection flow. The model achieves good accuracy in statistical properties and is able to reproduce the intermittent plume-mixing dynamics and probability density function of the convective heat flux.

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent natural convection in a cylindrical cavity using an off-lattice Boltzmann method

Sai Ravi Gupta Polasanapalli et al.

Summary: In this study, a characteristic-based off-lattice Boltzmann method with large-eddy simulation (LES) as the turbulence model is developed for simulating turbulent natural convection. The method is validated using benchmark cases and the flow and thermal characteristics are analyzed. Grid sensitivity study is conducted and an appropriate mesh resolution is selected based on LES index of quality-of-resolution. The results reveal the anisotropic nature of the thermal plume region and the dominant roles of production, convection, and diffusion in different areas of the cylindrical cavity.

Large eddy simulation of a thermal impinging jet using the lattice Boltzmann method

M. Nguyen et al.

Summary: In this study, a compressible hybrid lattice Boltzmann method solver was used to perform a wall-resolved large eddy simulation of an isothermal axisymmetric jet. The simulation results were able to reproduce the flow field statistics, Nusselt number profile, and shear stress profile of the jet. The lack of temporal periodicity in the azimuthally averaged Nusselt number at the location of the secondary peak was attributed to the relatively low azimuthal coherence of the primary vortical structures.

Turbulent convection for different thermal boundary conditions at the plates

Najmeh Foroozani et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of different thermal boundary conditions on turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection flows, showing that global heat transfer can be enhanced by up to 19% with conjugate heat transfer. While differences in local thermal boundary scales exist, the impact on mean temperature profiles and velocity fluctuations is relatively weak.

Revisiting Reynolds and Nusselt numbers in turbulent thermal convection

Shashwat Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: In this paper, the GL model is extended for predicting Reynolds number and Nusselt number in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection. Functional forms for dissipation rates prefactors are used, and machine learning is applied to determine revised predictions that show better agreement with past results in a three-dimensional unit box setting.

Prandtl number dependence of the small-scale properties in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection

Shashwat Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the effects of the Prandtl number on the spectra, fluxes, energy injection rates, and dissipation rates of turbulent thermal convection using numerical data. The results show that a smaller Prandtl number leads to stronger nonlinearity and increased kinetic-energy injection and dissipation rates in turbulent flows. Additionally, an increase in Prandtl number is associated with greater fluctuations in the local heat flux.
