A driving mechanism of near-wall turbulence subject to adverse pressure gradient in a plane Couette flow

Yuxin Jiao et al.

Summary: The effect of adverse pressure gradient (APG) on near-wall turbulence and its production mechanism are investigated. The study shows that APG inhibits the generation of near-wall streaks and leads to more localized and isotropic turbulent fluctuations. Furthermore, a new mechanism of near-wall turbulence production under strong APG, involving wall-normal nonlinear transport and vortical structures, is uncovered.

Large-scale and small-scale contribution to the skin friction reduction in a modified turbulent boundary layer by a large-eddy break-up device

C. Chan et al.

Summary: The role of streamwise length scales in turbulent skin friction generation is investigated. It is found that both the motions scaled with local boundary layer thickness and the large-scale ejection and sweep events contribute significantly to turbulent skin friction. The reduction of turbulent skin friction can be achieved by modifying both the large- and small-scale quadrant events.

Decomposition of the Reynolds shear stress in a turbulent boundary layer modified by miniature vortex generators

C. I. Chan et al.

Summary: In this study, the spanwise modulation of Reynolds shear stress (RSS) distributions in a turbulent boundary layer modified by miniature vortex generators (MVGs) is investigated using a time-resolved velocity data set. The methodology involves quadrant analysis of RSS to identify the spatial and temporal information of the RSS events. Spanwise Fourier mode decomposition and triple velocity decomposition are then applied to obtain statistics of the decomposed RSS events, including conditional mean structures and mean skin friction contributions. The spanwise modification of the MVG on the RSS is characterized by fundamental and subharmonic modes that scale with the spanwise separation distance between MVG pairs.

Spectral Analysis on Transport Budgets of Turbulent Heat Fluxes in Plane Couette Turbulence

Takuya Kawata et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been intensive research on scale-by-scale energy transport in wall turbulence and the complex spatial and interscale transfer of turbulent energy. This study investigates the spectral transport budgets of turbulent heat fluxes in a turbulent plane Couette flow. The similarity between the spectral transport of temperature-related statistics and Reynolds stresses is observed, especially in the inverse interscale transfer.

Ascending-descending and direct-inverse cascades of Reynolds stresses in turbulent Couette flow

Alessandro Chiarini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between small- and large-scale structures in a turbulent plane Couette flow using the anisotropic generalized Kolmogorov equations. Both bottom-up and top-down processes are considered, with a particular focus on the wall-normal direction. The findings reveal the involvement of large-scale motions in the production and redistribution of turbulent fluctuations, with complex interactions and cascades occurring within different scale ranges.

Minimal multi-scale dynamics of near-wall turbulence

Patrick Doohan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the temporal dynamics of near-wall turbulent flow with two integral length scales of motion using a shear stress-driven flow model, revealing scale interaction processes and non-equilibrium turbulent dissipation dynamics. A new scale interaction process is identified where wall-normal energy transfer from large to small scales drives small-scale turbulent production.

Direct numerical simulation of thermal channel flow for Reτ=5000 and Pr=0.71

Francisco Alcantara-Avila et al.

Summary: A direct numerical simulation of turbulent heat transfer in a channel flow was conducted at a Reynolds number of and a Prandtl number of air, . The study obtained mean values and intensities of temperature, calculated parameters such as the von Karman constant and the Nusselt number, and proposed correlations. It was observed that an asymptotic behavior of the von Karman constant was present as the Reynolds number increased.

Direct numerical simulation of thermal channel flow for medium-high Prandtl numbers up to Reτ=2000

F. Alcantara-Avila et al.

Summary: A new set of DNS experiments were conducted on a thermal channel flow, covering friction Reynolds and Prandtl numbers up to 2000 and 10, reaching a Prandtl number of 7 for water and introducing a new scale for the conductive sublayer thickness. The thermal field intensity does not increase with Reynolds number for highest Prandtl numbers, indicating good scaling near the wall. The Nusselt number shows a power function behavior with respect to Prandtl number in a certain range of the friction Peclet number, with turbulent Prandtl number increasing near the wall for highest Prandtl numbers due to reduction in thermal eddy diffusivity.

Interscale transport mechanisms in turbulent boundary layers

C. Chan et al.

Summary: The flow physics of turbulent boundary layers was investigated using spectral analysis based on the spanwise scale decomposition of the Reynolds stress transport equation with data obtained from direct numerical simulation. The study revealed evidence of inverse turbulent kinetic energy transfer occurring in the near-wall region, as well as inverse transfer of Reynolds shear stress transport across the entire boundary layer. Interactions between large-scale structures and the free stream flow were also observed at the edge of the boundary layer.

It finds that the amplitude modulation coefficient of the Reynolds shear stress is larger than that of the velocity components, and the frequency modulation effect has opposite influences in different directions.

Energy transfer structures associated with large-scale motions in a turbulent boundary layer

Summary: The study investigates the role of large-scale motions (LSMs) in energy transfer using wall-parallel velocity fields at low-to-moderate Reynolds number. An anisotropic filter is designed to explore energy flux, revealing a strong connection between large-scale energy flux events and LSMs. The findings suggest that the meandering nature of LSMs could play a determining role in the process of large-scale energy transfer.
