Parameterization of mixing in stratified open channel flow

Vassili Issaev et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics and parameterization of mixing in temporally evolving turbulent open-channel flow through direct numerical simulations. Three different mixing regimes are observed and the relationship between the mixing coefficient, flux Richardson number, and the gradient Richardson number is analyzed. Scaling relationships between Ri(g) and Fr are derived, and differences in the scaling of L-E/L-O with Fr-1 in the intermediate regime are discussed.

Simultaneous velocity-density measurements of downslope density clouds

M. E. Negretti et al.

Summary: This study presents laboratory experiments on the downslope propagation of a gravity current and provides measurements of its characteristics using PIV/PLIF techniques. The experimental data confirms the reliability of thermal theory in predicting the propagation speed, lateral surface, and buoyancy of the current. The study also investigates the entrainment rates based on turbulent fluxes and identifies the regions of entrainment/detrainment. The complexity in the internal structure of the current is revealed, with various turbulent processes taking place. The study suggests that existing parametrizations of turbulent fluxes are not applicable for buoyancy clouds due to their spatial heterogeneity.

Growth laws and self-similarity in the confined mixing zone of unstratified and strongly stably stratified isokinetic mixing-layers past a splitter plate

R. Kapulla et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the velocity and mixing scalar field of turbulent wake flows downstream of a slender splitter plate under unstratified and strongly stably stratified conditions. The results showed self-similarity in the development of the mixing zone for different conditions, and agreed well with theoretical models. The study is important for understanding the development and mixing processes of turbulent wake flows.

Mixing and nonlinear internal waves in a shallow flow of a three-layer stratified fluid

A. A. Chesnokov et al.

Summary: The study proposes a mathematical model to describe the mixing and propagation of nonlinear long waves in a shear three-layer flow of a stratified fluid under a lid. The model defines the concept of supercritical and subcritical three-layer flow and investigates both stationary and oscillating solutions. The model accurately represents the intense mixing region and characteristic features of the flow, as validated against experimental data and numerical results.

Probing the high mixing efficiency events in a lock-exchange flow through simultaneous velocity and temperature measurements

Tanmay Agrawal et al.

Summary: The study used high-resolution molecular tagging techniques to investigate gravity currents produced by a lock-exchange flow, where an initial temperature difference was introduced instead of salt for density stratification. The experiments focused on the interface between hot and cold fluids, with spatial resolution smaller than the Kolmogorov scale enabling accurate estimates of velocity and density gradients. The mixing efficiency was estimated to be about 0.13 with a standard deviation of 0.05, with dissipative stirring events associated with vortical overturns observed near the interface between the two fluids.

Diapycnal mixing efficiency in lock-exchange gravity currents

Partho Mukherjee et al.

Summary: Results of irreversible mixing efficiency for slumping gravity currents in a range of Reynolds numbers were presented, showing the plateauing value of the mixing efficiency is influenced by multiple parameters. New insights were achieved, indicating that different values of mixing efficiency can be observed for the same Reynolds number or gradient Richardson number due to the effects of turbulent regimes set up by different parameters. Increasing mixing efficiency in strongly stratified flow is possible by maintaining a sufficiently high turbulent Reynolds number. There was no drop in mixing efficiency observed in the parameter range studied, attributed to the presence of strongly stratified turbulence sustained by high turbulent Reynolds numbers.

Goldilocks mixing in oceanic shear-induced turbulent overturns

A. Mashayek et al.

Summary: A new parameterization based on the ratio of Thorpe and Ozmidov scales for the irreversible turbulent flux coefficient is presented, covering all key phases of a shear-induced stratified turbulence life cycle. The importance of the intermediate 'Goldilocks' phase, characterized by efficient energy transfer from background shear to turbulent mixing, is highlighted. The parameterization is supported by oceanographic datasets, emphasizing the significance of capturing turbulent flux associated with rare energetic overturns and the representation of young turbulent patches in connecting small scale physics to larger scale mixing applications.
