Airway basal stem cells reutilize the embryonic proliferation regulator, Tgfβ-Id2 axis, for tissue regeneration

Summary: During development, TGF-beta signaling inhibits Id2 to slow down the cell cycle and specify slow-cycling basal cells. In adult tissue regeneration, reduced TGF-beta signaling restores Id2 expression and initiates regeneration.

Development of alveolar and airway cells from human iPS cells: toward SARS-CoV-2 research and drug toxicity testing

Kayoko Tsuji et al.

Summary: This study generated ATII and club cells from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) for SARS-CoV-2 infection and drug testing, providing a useful in vitro model for drug development. The differentiated cells expressing ACE2 and TMPRSS2 were infected with SARS-CoV-2, and treatments with Remdesivir and bleomycin showed promising results in inhibiting viral replication and inducing cytotoxicity. These findings suggest the hiPSC-derived AT2 and club cells are valuable tools for studying COVID-19 pathogenesis and drug development.
