Ivermectin for COVID-19: Addressing Potential Bias and Medical Fraud

Early studies suggested its clinical benefits in treating the infection, but the quality of evidence varies and some trials may be fraudulent. Heparin in COVID-19 Patients Is Associated with Reduced In-Hospital Mortality: the Multicenter Italian CORIST Study *

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of heparin administration on survival in a large cohort of Italian COVID-19 patients and found that in-hospital heparin treatment was associated with a lower mortality rate, especially in severely ill patients and those with strong coagulation activation. Further results from randomized clinical trials are needed to provide clear recommendations.

Summary: The study reports clinical and laboratory coagulation characteristics of pediatric and young adult patients treated for symptomatic COVID-19 in a children's hospital in the Bronx. Elevated D-dimer and increased venous thromboembolism rate were observed, particularly in those with severe respiratory complications, indicating the presence of thrombotic coagulopathy. More data are needed to guide thromboprophylaxis in this age group.

The COVID-19 Pandemic and Changes in Healthcare Utilization for Pediatric Respiratory and Nonrespiratory Illnesses in the United States

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, pediatric encounters for respiratory diseases decreased significantly while reductions for nonrespiratory diseases were more modest and varied by age. Encounters for respiratory diseases among adolescents declined less and returned to previous levels faster compared to younger children. Further research is needed to determine the contributions of decreased illness and changes in care-seeking behavior to this observed reduction.

Factors Associated With COVID-19 Disease Severity in US Children and Adolescents

Summary: In children and adolescents, the severity of COVID-19 disease is associated with factors such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, neuromuscular disease, and pulmonary disease. 20% of patients require hospitalization, with 21% receiving care in the intensive care unit, while older patients have a lower risk of hospitalization but experience more severe illness when hospitalized.

Thrombotic risk in children with COVID-19 infection: A systematic review of the literature

Summary: Thrombotic or thromboembolic events are rare in pediatric patients with COVID-19 infection and MIS-C. The most common site of thrombosis is the lung, and heparin is the most frequently used drug. The risk of ischemic stroke in SARS-CoV-2 infection and deep venous thrombosis in MIS-C was lower in children compared to adults.
