Comparison of dentoskeletal and soft tissue changes between tooth-borne and tooth-bone-borne hybrid nonsurgical rapid maxillary expansions in adults: a retrospective observational study

Jung-Sub An et al.

Summary: This study compared dentoskeletal and soft tissue changes between tooth-borne and tooth-bone-borne rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in adults. While both methods showed similar dental expansion at the crown level, the tooth-bone-borne RME induced increased skeletal and parallel expansion of the maxilla. Tooth-bone-borne RME resulted in forward displacement of the maxilla without significant changes in vertical dimension, while tooth-borne RME exhibited backward displacement of the mandible, increased vertical dimension, and decreased overbite.
