N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalyzed Ester Synthesis from Organic Halides through Incorporation of Oxygen Atoms from Air

Hui Tan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a novel N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed oxidative transformation of organic halides into esters utilizing O-2 as the oxygen source. Mechanistic studies show the oxidation of deoxy Breslow intermediate to Breslow intermediate for further transformation. This method expands the field of NHC catalysis and promotes oxygenation reactions with O-2.

Functional Copolymers Married with Lanthanide(III) Ions: A Win-Win Pathway to Fabricate Rare Earth Fluorescent Materials with Multiple Applications

Shaoxiong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple and effective strategy to enhance luminescence from lanthanide ions by synthesizing a water soluble copolymer, forming complexes with Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions, and finely tuning the ratios to achieve white light emission. The resulting materials not only exhibit luminescent properties, but also inherit additional functions from the copolymer, making them suitable for fingerprint imaging, luminescent soft matters formation, colorful organic light-emitting diode device fabrication, and acid/alkali vapors detection.

Reactions of Styrylmalonates with Aromatic Aldehydes: Detailed Synthetic and Mechanistic Studies

Denis D. Borisov et al.

Summary: The reactions of styrylmalonates with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of Lewis and Bronsted acids, along with their regularities, have been studied in detail. Various approaches have been developed for the synthesis of polysubstituted compounds with control over chemo-, regio-, stereo-, and diastereoselectivity. The mechanisms of these reactions were extensively studied using multinuclear NMR experiments, monitoring reactions in NMR tubes, and O-18 isotope labeling.

α- and β-Functionalized Ketones from 1,3-Dienes and Aldehydes: Control of Regio- and Enantioselectivity in Hydroacylation of 1,3-Dienes

Mahesh M. Parsutkar et al.

Summary: This study presents a new cobalt(I)-catalyzed regio- and enantioselective hydroacylation reaction of dienes, providing chiral products containing ketone functionality. Different classes of dienes show distinct regioselectivity during the reaction, and a mechanism involving a Co(I)/Co(III) oxidative dimerization cycle is proposed. The efficient syntheses of commercial relevant compounds using this method demonstrate its practical utility.
