Umpolung carbonyls enable direct allylation and olefination of carbohydrates

Jian Kan et al.

Summary: This study reports a direct deoxygenative allylation and olefination of carbohydrates by using an umpolung strategy of carbohydrate carbonyls. This method overcomes the intrinsic problems of carbohydrates, allowing selective functionalization of natural carbohydrates.

Synthesis and Structural Characteristics of all Mono- and Difluorinated 4,6-Dideoxy-D-xylo-hexopyranoses

David E. Wheatley et al.

Summary: Protein-carbohydrate interactions are crucial in biochemical processes, and fluorinated carbohydrate analogues play an important role in studying these interactions and in medical applications. The synthesis of monosaccharides with various fluorinated motifs was studied, showing that introducing electronegative substituents can increase deoxyfluorination yields. The study also revealed unexpected trends in alpha/beta anomeric ratios with increasing fluorine content.

Photocatalytic, site-selective oxidations of carbohydrates

Daniel J. Gorelik et al.

Summary: Site-selective oxidations of carbohydrates have been achieved using acridinium photocatalysis and quinuclidine hydrogen atom transfer catalysis. Protocols have been developed for oxidations of all-equatorial carbohydrates and those containing cis-1,2-diols. The site-selectivity is determined by the relative rates of hydrogen atom transfer from the carbohydrate C-H bonds and can be enhanced using a phosphate hydrogen-bonding or boronic acid catalyst.
