Projection-suspended stereolithography 3D printing for low-loss optical hydrogel fiber fabrication

Xuan Zhuo et al.

Summary: Hydrogel fibers have great potential for light delivery and sensing in vivo but often suffer from high optical attenuation. A projection-suspended stereolithography 3D printing method was demonstrated to fabricate low-loss and uniform fibers, improving guiding efficiency and sensing capability. This novel fabrication method also enables light delivery and sensing in deep tissues, benefiting the development of biomedicine and optogenetics.

Single-Mode, 700%-Stretchable, Elastic Optical Fibers Made of Thermoplastic Elastomers

Soroush Shabahang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a method for fabricating small-diameter optical fibers using thermal drawing of transparent thermoplastic elastomers, which are highly elastic and durable against strain. Additionally, a composite thermoplastic-thermoset elastic optical fiber is introduced, combining the advantageous properties of both elastomer families. These optical fibers have potential applications for short-distance, mechanically flexible optical interconnections in biomedical, wearable, or implantable photonic devices.
