Waveguide-type Maxwellian near-eye display using a pin-mirror holographic optical element array

Myeong-Ho Choi et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel waveguide-type optical see-through Maxwellian near-eye display for augmented reality. It utilizes a pin-mirror holographic optical element (HOE) array to achieve Maxwellian view and eye-box replication. Each pin-mirror HOE presents virtual images with deep depth of field, reducing the discrepancy between vergence and accommodation distance. The compact form factor is achieved through thin waveguide and HOE couplers.

Large Depth of Range Maxwellian-Viewing SMV Near-Eye Display Based on a Pancharatnam-Berry Optical Element

Lin Wang et al.

Summary: To overcome the common issue of visual fatigue in AR displays caused by accommodation and convergence conflict, we propose a Maxwellian-viewing-super-multi-view (MV-SMV) near-eye display system based on a Pancharatnam-Berry optical element (PBOE). By using an array of high-efficiency polarization gratings, the PBOE can direct different views to different directions simultaneously, constructing a 3D light field. Experimental results show that the MV-SMV display can effectively present virtual images with correct accommodation depth cue within a large depth of field (DOF).

Freeform OST-HMD system with large exit pupil diameter and vision correction capability

Dewen Cheng et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new type of optical see-through head-mounted display system that achieves compactness, light weight, low distortion for virtual image, and high light efficiency. The system includes wedge-shaped freeform prisms and symmetric lenses, and it is smaller and lighter compared to other solutions while achieving a 50% higher light efficiency in the virtual image light path.

Design and implementation of an optical see-through near-eye display combining Maxwellian-view and light-field methods

Qingtian Zhang et al.

Summary: We propose an optical see-through near-eye display method that combines the advantages of Maxwellian-view and light field displays. The system provides an accommodation-free virtual image as the background with a large field of view, and also offers a high-resolution full-depth-cue image with a smaller field of view.
