Sample sizes for saturation in qualitative research: A systematic review of empirical tests

Monique Hennink et al.

Summary: This review explores empirical studies on saturation in qualitative research to determine sample sizes and assessment strategies. The findings suggest that commonly used qualitative research methods typically require a small number of interviews or focus group discussions to reach saturation, although these results may only apply to studies with homogenous populations and clearly defined objectives.

What people really change after genetic testing (GT) performed in private labs: results from an Italian study

Serena Oliveri et al.

Summary: The study investigated long-term changes in health-related choices, individual tendencies, and risk attitudes among Italian GT users. Results showed that participants who intended to modify their behavior after learning their GT results did so over time, with a healthier diet being the most common long-term behavioral change observed. Psychological variables like risk-taking attitude and risk tolerance did not seem to affect the decision to change lifestyle. Overall, there was a reduction in anxiety and worry over health, but also a decrease in motivation for health promotion and prevention, health esteem, and positive expectations for future health.

Development and validation of a visual field cluster in retinitis pigmentosa

Takashi Omoto et al.

Summary: The study aimed to establish and evaluate a new clustering method for predicting future visual field test results in retinitis pigmentosa patients. The results showed that the new sector-wise regression method was more accurate in prediction compared to traditional methods, with higher prediction accuracy.

A qualitative study among patients with an inherited retinal disease on the meaning of genomic unsolicited findings

Marlies Saelaert et al.

Summary: This study explores the meaning of unsolicited findings (UFs) from a patient perspective in the context of exome-based testing for genetic diseases. Patients attribute complex meanings to UFs, including result-specific qualities, lived illness experiences, and family embedding. This suggests the need for personalised counselling approaches that take into account patients' experiences and family context.

Updating the Genetic Landscape of Inherited Retinal Dystrophies

Belen Garcia Bohorquez et al.

Summary: Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRD) are a group of diseases with high genetic and clinical variability, making genetic diagnosis challenging. Next generation sequencing has greatly improved diagnostic accuracy, identifying novel mutations and enabling accurate genetic counseling. The study identified multiple pathogenic variants and highlighted the importance of including deep-intronic regions in gene panel design for effective genetic diagnosis.

Anxiety and Depression in Patients With Retinitis Pigmentosa

Patrick Le et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with RP have a significantly higher prevalence of anxiety and depression, with about 5 to 6 times increased odds compared to the general population for having anxiety or depression, and about 4 times for having both anxiety and depression.
