Scale model design for the stiffened plate subjected to combined longitudinal compression and lateral pressure considering collapse modes

Hongyang Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, similitude criteria for stiffened plates subjected to combined longitudinal compression and lateral pressure are explored based on collapse modes. The proposed approaches assume dominant collapse modes based on the slenderness ratios of different components of the plate. Experimental validation is conducted using a non-dimensional parameter for lateral pressure and scaling factors based on thin-walled beam theory. The similitude of full-scale prototypes and scale models is verified using normalized ultimate stress, demonstrating reasonable design of scale models under combined loads.

Ultimate strength characteristics of as-built ultra-large containership hull structures under combined vertical bending and torsion

Dong Hun Lee et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the ultimate strength characteristics of as-built ultra-large containership hull structures under combined vertical bending and torsional moments using the intelligent supersize finite element method (ISFEM). The study analyzes three containerships of varying sizes and formulates ultimate strength interaction relationships for containership hull girders. Insights and structural design recommendations obtained from the study will not only enhance the ultimate limit state capacity of containership hull structures in existing sizes but also achieve the robust structural design of ultra-larger containerships.

Lateral pressure effect on the ultimate strength of the stiffened plate subjected to combined loads

Hongyang Ma et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the collapse modes and ultimate strength of stiffened plates under the symmetric end condition subjected to combined axial compression and lateral loads, finding that lateral pressure can influence the ultimate strength and collapse mode by changing the pre-buckling strength and initial deflection magnitude. In addition, empirical formulas containing the non-dimensional parameter of lateral pressure are proposed to quantitatively analyze the influence of lateral pressure, with the validity of these formulas further verified through experiments.

Experimental and numerical study on the ultimate strength of stiffened plates subjected to combined biaxial compression and lateral loads

Hongyang Ma et al.

Summary: The ultimate strength and collapse behaviors of stiffened plates under the combined biaxial compression and lateral loads were studied through experimental and numerical analyses. The study also investigated the influence of interactions between lateral and transverse loads on the ultimate strength of the plates.
