Yogurt, cultured fermented milk, and health: a systematic review

Dennis A. Savaiano et al.

Summary: Consumption of yogurt and other fermented products has positive effects on gastrointestinal and cardiovascular health, cancer risk, weight management, diabetes and metabolic health, and bone density. There is a causal relationship between lactose digestion and tolerance and yogurt consumption, and consistent associations between fermented milk consumption and reduced risk of breast and colorectal cancer and type 2 diabetes, improved weight maintenance, and improved cardiovascular, bone, and gastrointestinal health. Dairy product consumption, including fermented products like yogurt, should be encouraged as part of national dietary guidelines for favorable health outcomes.

Bioactive Compounds from Kefir and Their Potential Benefits on Health: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Carla P. Vieira et al.

Summary: Despite the known health benefits of kefir, a systematic review with meta-analysis on bioactive compounds associated with these benefits is still lacking. Research has shown differences in the microbial composition between industrial and artisanal kefir, as well as identified bioactive compounds like exopolysaccharides, bioactive peptides, and lactic acid. These compounds exhibit antimicrobial, anticancer, and immune-modulatory activities, with potential differences in functional potential between the two types of kefir.

Potential beneficial effects of kefir and its postbiotic, kefiran, on child food allergy

Susy erika de Lima Barros et al.

Summary: Food allergies are a common public health issue affecting people of all age groups, particularly babies and children, impacting nutritional status and quality of life. The increase in consumption of healthy foods has led to a growing demand for functional foods with specific health benefits, prompting the pharmaceutical industry's interest in natural products as an alternative to synthetic drugs. Kefir has gained attention for its nutritional and therapeutic properties in treating various diseases, with postbiotics like kefiran showing potential beneficial effects on food allergies.

The effects of kefir in mixed meals on appetite and food intake: a randomized cross-over trial

Zeynep Caferoglu et al.

Summary: This study found that adding kefir to a high glycemic index meal may prevent increases in appetite and food intake, resulting in postprandial responses similar to those of a low glycemic index meal. These findings might enable the development of novel dietary strategies based on appetite regulation to treat or prevent obesity, particularly for Western societies.
