Global, regional, and national burden of ischaemic heart disease and its attributable risk factors, 1990-2017: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Haijiang Dai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the burden and risk factors for ischaemic heart disease (IHD) in 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017. The results showed that IHD remains a major public health challenge worldwide, with variations in burden and temporal trends across different geographical locations. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, smoking, and obesity were identified as the main risk factors for IHD deaths.

Association between the 10-year predicted risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and dietary patterns among Canadian adults 40-79 years

Zeinab Hosseini et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the 10-year ASCVD risk and cardiovascular age gap (CAG) of Canadians aged 40-79, as well as the association between prevalent dietary patterns and ASCVD risk, and CAG. The results showed that different dietary patterns were associated with ASCVD risk and CAG in this population.

Patterns of Red and Processed Meat Consumption across North America: A Nationally Representative Cross-Sectional Comparison of Dietary Recalls from Canada, Mexico, and the United States

Sarah M. Frank et al.

Summary: Close economic ties among Canada, Mexico, and the US facilitate the production and trade of meat. Understanding consumption patterns of red and processed meat in North America can inform policies aimed at reducing meat consumption and supporting environmental and public health efforts. Overall, consumption of red and processed meat remains high in North America, with differences in consumption patterns among demographics such as gender, wealth, and education levels. Strategies to decrease meat consumption are relevant for all three countries.

Associations of cereal grains intake with cardiovascular disease and mortality across 21 countries in Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiology study: prospective cohort study

Sumathi Swaminathan et al.

Summary: The study found that a high intake of refined grains was associated with higher risk of mortality and major cardiovascular disease events, while intakes of whole grains or white rice were not significantly associated with health outcomes. Globally, reducing consumption of refined grains should be considered for better health outcomes.

Ultra-processed Foods and Cardiovascular Diseases: Potential Mechanisms of Action

Filippa Juul et al.

Summary: Ultra-processed foods may impact cardiometabolic health through various mechanisms, involving factors such as nutritional composition, food additives, and physical structure. Processed foods may affect cardiometabolic health through influencing absorption kinetics, satiety, glycemic response, and gut microbiota composition. Further research is needed to clarify the harm associated with the nutritional composition, food additives, physical structure, and other attributes of ultra-processed foods.

Relationship between Dietary Patterns and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Korean Older Adults

Ae-Rim Seo et al.

Summary: This study found that elderly men who adopted a healthy dietary pattern had a lower 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those who adopted a typical Korean dietary pattern. Additionally, the 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease was lower in men who performed strength training, with no significant differences observed in women.
