Towards grain-scale modelling of the release of radioactive fission gas from oxide fuel. Part I: SCIANTIX

G. Zullo et al.

Summary: When assessing the radiological consequences of postulated accident scenarios, determining the amount of radioactive fission gas accumulated in the fuel rod free volume is crucial. This study reviewed the state-of-the-art semi-empirical approach and compared it with a mechanistic approach, providing a satisfactory agreement with measurement and demonstrating the model soundness. The research is important for evaluating the behavior of fuel rods under normal and off-normal conditions.

Application of the SCIANTIX fission gas behaviour module to the integral pin performance in sodium fast reactor irradiation conditions

A. Magni et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the performance of fuel pins in a sodium-cooled fast reactor through the comparison of two fuel performance codes. The results suggest that further expansion and validation of the SCIANTIX module for MOX in fast reactors is needed, but GERMINAL-TRANSURANUS demonstrates good code capabilities for fast reactor conditions.

On the use of spectral algorithms for the prediction of short-lived volatile fission product release: Methodology for bounding numerical error

G. Zullo et al.

Summary: Recent developments in spectral diffusion algorithms have shown their effectiveness in fast transient conditions. However, the numerical error and parameter uncertainties associated with these algorithms may affect the reliability of predictions on short-lived volatile fission product release. This study provides an upper bound on the numerical error introduced by the spectral diffusion algorithm and proposes a methodology to limit the numerical error on short-lived volatile fission product retention.

Physics-based modelling and validation of inter-granular helium behaviour in SCIANTIX

R. Giorgi et al.

Summary: In this study, a new mechanistic model is proposed to describe the behavior of helium at the grain boundaries in oxide nuclear fuel. The model considers diffusion, trapping, and thermal re-solution of helium both between grains and within grains. It is implemented in a meso-scale software and validated against experimental data. The results show improved agreement with the experimental data and the ability to represent the kinetics of helium release at high temperature. The uncertainties associated with the initial conditions and some model parameters are analyzed, and it is found that the results are robust when reasonable values are used.

Towards a physics-based description of intra-granular helium behaviour in oxide fuel for application in fuel performance codes

L. Cognini et al.

Summary: A new mechanistic model for the treatment of helium behavior, which includes the description of helium solubility in oxide fuel, has been proposed and validated in this work. The model shows satisfactory agreement with experimental data and can be continuously improved as more related experimental data become available.

Modelling of thermal conductivity and melting behaviour of minor actinide-MOX fuels and assessment against experimental and molecular dynamics data

A. Magni et al.

Summary: This work presents original correlations for the thermal conductivity and melting temperature of minor actinide-MOX fuels, derived based on existing literature and accessible data. The statistical evaluation of these correlations shows their significance with respect to the experimental dataset used for fitting. The accuracy of these new correlations is in line with existing ones and state-of-the-art experimental uncertainties.

Assessment of three European fuel performance codes against the SUPERFACT-1 fast reactor irradiation experiment

L. Luzzi et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the assessment of three European fuel performance codes in predicting fuel restructuring, cladding deformation, actinide redistribution, and volatile fission products under fast reactor irradiation conditions. Comparison with experimental data highlights potential modeling development paths for improved description of fuel pin behavior.
