Heart rate variability and sympathetic skin response for the assessment of autonomic dysfunction in leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 associated Parkinson's disease

Amina Nasri et al.

Summary: We assessed and compared autonomic function in Parkinson's disease (PD) associated with the LRRK2 G2019S mutation (LRRK2-PD) and nonLRRK2 PD using heart rate variability (HRV) and sympathetic skin responses (SSR). The majority of PD patients had neurophysiological, parasympathetic, and sympathetic dysautonomia. There were no significant differences in the rates of dysautonomia between LRRK2-PD and nonLRRK2 PD patients, but LRRK2-PD patients showed more pronounced parasympathetic dysfunction, particularly in females, and preserved autonomic functions in early-onset parkinsonism.

Essential tremor and cognitive impairment: who, how, and why

Sandy Maria Cartella et al.

Summary: This review discusses the clinical characteristics, neuropsychological profile, mechanisms, and possible biomarkers of cognitive impairment in essential tremor (ET) patients. The most recent theories suggest cerebellar dysfunction as a potential underlying mechanism. Various tests can be used to assess cognitive impairment in ET patients, but there are no established biomarkers. Further research is needed to better understand cognition in ET patients and define the boundary between ET and ET plus.

Genomic Markers for Essential Tremor

Felix Javier Jimenez-Jimenez et al.

Summary: Research on genetic factors related to ET includes family linkage studies, genome-wide association studies, and candidate gene association studies, but no specific genes have been definitively linked to the risk of ET. Ongoing efforts are still being made to identify responsible genes for ET.

Clinical-Instrumental patterns of neurodegeneration in Essential Tremor: A data-driven approach

Giovanni Mostile et al.

Summary: The study identified two distinct phenotypes of Essential Tremor (ET) through a clinicalinstrumental data-driven approach, with one subtype associated with neurodegeneration characterized by gait and mobility impairment, midline tremor, cognitive decline, and retinal degeneration.
