Neural Presbyacusis in Humans Inferred from Age-Related Differences in Auditory Nerve Function and Structure

Kelly C. Harris et al.

Summary: The study found that older adults experience significant degradation in auditory function, characterized by decreased neural synchrony and auditory nerve disengagement, leading to difficulties in understanding speech in challenging listening conditions. High-resolution brain imaging revealed lower density in cranial nerve VIII in older adults with poorer neural synchrony, which may be the reason for their decreased speech recognition ability.
