Structure, dynamics and assembly of the ankyrin complex on human red blood cell membrane

Xian Xia et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors used cryo-EM to solve the structures of nine native band 3-associated complexes from human red blood cell membrane. Their findings provide insights into the assembly of the ankyrin complex during erythropoiesis and identify essential interactions for the mechanical stability of red blood cells.

Summary: The cryo-EM structures of the human erythrocyte ankyrin-1 complex provide insights into the architecture of the RBC membrane and demonstrate how ankyrins recruit different membrane proteins to enable membrane transport processes.
