The physics of empty liquids: from patchy particles to water

John Russo et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the connections between empty liquids, patchy particles, and water. It highlights the modeling principles that allow an empty liquid to behave like water, including factors such as the appearance of thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies, the possibility of liquid-liquid phase transitions, and the crystallization of open crystalline structures.

Low- and high-density forms of liquid water revealed by a new medium-range order descriptor

Chiara Faccio et al.

Summary: In this study, a computational approach based on molecular dynamics simulations and graph theory was used to characterize the structure of liquid water. By introducing a new order parameter NTC, researchers found different high-density-liquid (HDL) and low-density-liquid (LDL) water phases in liquid water, and discovered that the HDL-like forms are not homogeneous but composed of regions with different local densities.

Isotopy and energy of physical networks

Yanchen Liu et al.

Summary: The study introduces the concept of network isotopy and graph linking number to distinguish physical networks with identical wiring but different layouts. It reveals that each local tangle contributes independently to the total energy of the network, aiding in the formulation of a statistical model. Application of this framework shows that the entanglement level in the mouse connectome exceeds expectations based on optimal wiring.

Self-Assembly of Patchy Colloidal Rods into Photonic Crystals Robust to Stacking Faults

Andreas Neophytou et al.

Summary: Through a computational approach, we address the challenges of design principles, self-assembly pathways, and stability of the photonic band gap. We establish the design principles for the rod-connected diamond structure (RCD) and devise two distinct self-assembly routes, showing how these routes avoid metastable amorphous phases. Finally, we demonstrate that both polymorphs support spectrally overlapping photonic band gaps.

Structural and topological changes across the liquid-liquid transition in water

Riccardo Foffi et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that the TIP4P/Ice water model can be studied numerically at and below its liquid-liquid critical temperature. Through simulations along a subcritical isotherm, it was found that structural changes taking place across the liquid-liquid transition are influenced by the topological properties of the H-bond network. Specifically, the high-density liquid structure originates from the folding back of long rings, bringing pairs of molecules separated by several hydrogen-bonds close by in space.

Fast Linking Numbers for Topology Verification of Loopy Structures

Ante Qu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for efficiently computing and verifying linking numbers between closed curves in order to preserve topological invariants in the processing of loopy structures. The method has three stages and can efficiently identify and correct topology errors, ensuring more robust handling of loopy structures.

Total synthesis of colloidal matter

Theodore Hueckel et al.

Summary: Atoms serve as an inspiration for colloidal self-assembly, allowing building blocks to combine and confer functionality through principles like directionality, valence, and reversible binding. Tetrahedral structures inspired by carbon atoms bonding are now accessible through molecular mimetic colloidal building blocks. Complex colloidal particles can be synthesized and arranged in their own periodic table, leading to diverse assembly routes based on unique particle shape and surface chemistry.
