Summary: Identification of gaseous decomposition products from irreversible side-reactions helps understand the inner workings of rechargeable batteries. This study focused on gas evolution processes in Na-ion batteries through online electrochemical mass spectrometry, revealing differences in SEI stability and electrolyte reduction between Na-ion and Li-ion systems. The findings provide insights for developing more durable electrode-electrolyte interphases for higher specific energy and improved cycling stability in Na-ion batteries.

Correlating ligand-to-metal charge transfer with voltage hysteresis in a Li-rich rock-salt compound exhibiting anionic redox

Biao Li et al.

Summary: Anionic redox in Li-ion cathodes offers increased energy density but comes with drawbacks such as voltage hysteresis. This study investigates the origin of voltage hysteresis by designing a Li-rich cation-disordered rock-salt compound and reveals a non-equilibrium redox pathway responsible for voltage hysteresis. The charge transfer involving structural distortion between O and Fe states is found to be the cause of voltage hysteresis.

Activation of anionic redox in d0 transition metal chalcogenides by anion doping

Bernhard T. Leube et al.

Summary: The synthesis of Li2TiS3-xSex solid solution series with mixed ligands reveals a bell-shaped variation in electrochemical activity, peaking at x = 0.6 composition. The capacity results from interactions between anionic and cationic redox processes, with evidence for metal-ligand charge transfer. Insights from this study can guide the rational synthesis of other Li-rich chalcogenides for solid-state batteries.
