Zonally contrasting shifts of the tropical rain belt in response to climate change

Antonios Mamalakis et al.

Summary: Future changes in the position of the intertropical convergence zone due to climate change could have significant impacts on the livelihood and food security of billions of people worldwide. Research using state-of-the-art climate models projects a zonally varying shift of the ITCZ by 2100, with regions in eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean experiencing a northward movement, while the eastern Pacific and Atlantic oceans see a southward shift. This zonally varying response is consistent with changes in atmospheric energy transport and sector-mean shifts of the energy flux equator, providing valuable insight for more accurate climate change impact projections.

Evaluating the large-scale hydrological cycle response within the Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project Phase 2 (PlioMIP2) ensemble

Zixuan Han et al.

Summary: The study found that increased atmospheric moisture content in the mid-Pliocene ensemble led to wetter conditions in the deep tropics and drier conditions in the subtropics. The dynamic effect plays a more important role than the thermodynamic effect in regional precipitation changes, shifting the ITCZ northward and wetting the northern Indian Ocean. An imbalance of interhemispheric atmospheric energy during the mid-Pliocene altered the hydroclimate through changes in the dynamic effect and offsetting the thermodynamic effect.

Reduced El Nino variability in the mid-Pliocene according to the PlioMIP2 ensemble

Summary: Studies on the mid-Pliocene warm period suggest a reduced El Nino variability in the model-ensemble mean, with no significant decrease in zonal sea surface temperature gradients in the equatorial Pacific.

Synchronized spatial shifts of Hadley and Walker circulations

Summary: This study reveals that the seasonally evolving warm-pool sea surface temperature anomalies in the decay phase of an El Nino event can cause meridionally asymmetric Walker circulation response, leading to phase-synchronized spatial shift in Walker and Hadley cells, and impacting extratropical precipitation variability on interannual timescales.
