Expression level is a major modifier of the fitness landscape of a protein coding gene

Zhuoxing Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that the phenotypic effects of genetic mutations are related to gene expression levels, with at least 42% of single-nucleotide mutations showing fitness effects dependent on gene expression levels and influenced by stochastic molecular errors.

Asexual Experimental Evolution of Yeast Does Not Curtail Transposable Elements

Piaopiao Chen et al.

Summary: Sexual reproduction aids in the transmission of transposable elements (TEs) between genomes and enhances selection against deleterious TEs, but its overall effect on TE proliferation remains uncertain. Empirical evidence suggests that sexual reproduction may be key to the evolutionary success of TEs in yeast, but this contradicts their maintenance in natural populations with infrequent sexual reproduction. The balance between TE transposition and excision rates appears to play a significant role in maintaining TE load in yeast populations.

A precisely adjustable, variation-suppressed eukaryotic transcriptional controller to enable genetic discovery

Asli Azizoglu et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new gene expression controller, WTC846, for precise and graded gene expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, independent of growth conditions. This controller allows for adjustable protein expression across a range of cellular abundances with limited variation.
