Pt3Mn alloy nanostructure with high-index facets by Sn doping modified for highly catalytic active electro-oxidation reactions

Yunrui Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the enhanced activity and stability for electro-oxidation of small organic molecules by implanting oxyphilic metal Sn into the surface of Pt3Mn concave nanocubes. The formed Sn/Pt3Mn catalysts exhibit better specific activity and mass activity compared to unmodified Pt3Mn catalyst for both FAOR and MOR. The presence of Sn efficiently protects the surface structure and decreases the reaction activation energy, leading to better catalytic performance.

Pt-Sn-Co nanocubes as highly active catalysts for ethanol electro-oxidation

Ruben Rizo et al.

Summary: Direct ethanol fuel cells have great potential as clean electrochemical power sources, but their commercialization is hindered by the high cost and low efficiency of Pt-based catalysts. Pt-Sn-Co nanocubes with a Pt-and Sn-rich shell showed improved performance for the electrochemical ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) due to the leaching of Sn from the core and shell, leading to electrochemically-accessible Pt sites adjacent to partially-oxidized Sn sites on a Pt3Co-like core. The increased activity of the Pt-Sn-Co nanocubes was attributed to the higher production of C-1 (CO2) and C-2 (acetic acid/acetaldehyde) products during EOR as well as their ability to remove adsorbed CO from the Pt surface.

Role of the Secondary Metal in Ordered and Disordered Pt-M Intermetallic Nanoparticles: An Example of Pt3Sn Nanocubes for the Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation

Hsiang-Sheng Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that in Pt3Sn catalysts, 60% ordered nanocubes exhibit higher activity compared to 95% ordered nanocubes, as the Sn atoms in the 60% ordered nanocubes are more easily oxidized to Sn4+, leading to better oxidation efficiency. This highlights the importance of controlling the environment and neighboring atoms in catalyst design for intermetallic Pt-M electrocatalysts.

Strong Metal-Support Interaction for 2D Materials: Application in Noble Metal/TiB2 Heterointerfaces and their Enhanced Catalytic Performance for Formic Acid Dehydrogenation

Renhong Li et al.

Summary: In the study of strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between noble metal and 2D TiB2 supports, direct evidence of encapsulating metal nanoparticles with TiB2 overlayers to form sintering-resistant core-shell structures is reported. This newly created TiB2-based SMSI promotes catalytic activity and stability simultaneously, optimizing hydrogen production and selectivity. The theoretical and experimental results suggest that the interaction between transition metals and TiB2 overlayers plays a crucial role in creating thermally stable and catalytically active metal/support interfaces for scalable chemical and energy applications.

Hydrogen-Intercalation-Induced Lattice Expansion of Pd@Pt Core-Shell Nanoparticles for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Alcohol Oxidation

Guigao Liu et al.

Summary: Lattice engineering on specific facets of metal catalysts is crucial for enhancing catalytic performance, as shown by a two-step method developed to expand the lattice on Pt(100) and Pt(111) facets. This lattice expansion significantly promotes alcohol oxidation reactions on both Pt(100) and Pt(111) facets, with impressive mass-specific activities achieved on the Pt(111) facet. Density functional theory calculations suggest that enhanced OH adsorption is responsible for the improved catalytic performance. These findings pave the way for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of nanomaterials and designing highly efficient catalysts.
