Deep Subwavelength Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures on Silicon as a Novel Multifunctional Biosensing Platform

Yulia Borodaenko et al.

Summary: In this study, self-organized laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) with the shortest ever reported periodicity of 70 +/- 10 nm were directly imprinted on a crystalline Si wafer upon its femtosecond-laser ablation in isopropanol. The produced deep subwavelength LIPSSs demonstrate strong anisotropic anti-reflection performance, ensuring efficient delivery of incident far-field radiation to electromagnetic hot spots localized in Si nanogaps, allowing for various optical biosensing platforms to operate. The 80-fold enhancement of spontaneous emission from organic dye molecules attached to the nanolayer, as well as in situ optical tracing of catalytic molecular transformations, support deep subwavelength Si LIPSSs as a promising inexpensive multifunctional biosensing platform.

Formation of laser-induced periodic surface nanometric concentric ring structures on silicon surfaces through single-spot irradiation with orthogonally polarized femtosecond laser double-pulse sequences

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: Laser-induced periodic surface nanometric concentric ring structures can be formed on silicon surfaces through single-spot irradiation with orthogonally polarized femtosecond laser double-pulse sequences. The period of the ring structures is slightly smaller than the irradiated laser's wavelength, indicating low-spatial-frequency laser-induced periodic surface structures. The formation mechanism of the concentric ring structures is attributed to the radial distribution of surface waves stimulated by orthogonally polarized pulses.

Deep-Subwavelength 2D Periodic Surface Nanostructures on Diamond by Double-Pulse Femtosecond Laser Irradiation

Matteo Mastellone et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates, for the first time, the achievement of two-dimensional laser-induced periodic surface structures with deep-subwavelength periodicity on diamond surfaces. The method involves using two temporally delayed and cross-polarized femtosecond-laser pulses to achieve distinctive nanotexturing, which can be controlled by varying the number of pulses. The effective treatment of large areas of diamond surfaces under scanning mode leads to significantly enhanced absorptance in the visible range, paving the way for the development of metasurfaces for future diamond-based optoelectronic devices.

Generation of 2D-arrays of anisotropically shaped nanoparticles by nanosecond laser-induced periodic surface patterning

Sebastian Durbach et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional surface pattern formation is achieved by irradiation of a gold thin film on a silicon wafer by circular- or non-polarized nanosecond laser pulses. The laser-induced reorganization shows similarities with laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPPS) formation. The created hexagonal and square patterns have good agreement with calculations of theoretically calculated wavelength of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs).

Two-dimensional suprawavelength periodic surface structuring of a ZnO single crystal with a UV femtosecond laser

Cheng Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel microstructure was formed on the surface of crystalline ZnO in ambient air by a single femtosecond laser beam. The structure had a controlled period of 2-6 micrometers and was independent of laser polarization. The formation was attributed to mechanical cracking induced by multiple-cyclic heating from linear absorption of the femtosecond pulses.
