Mass Transfer at the Ocean-Atmosphere Interface: The Role of Wave Breaking, Droplets, and Bubbles

Luc Deike

Summary: Breaking waves have a significant impact on the climate system by influencing the transfer of energy, momentum, and mass between the ocean and atmosphere. This article explores the importance of drops and bubbles generated by breaking waves and discusses recent progress in understanding the processes involved. It also proposes a pathway towards mechanistic parameterizations that account for the effects of sea state.

Dynamics of an oil-coated bubble rising in a quiescent water medium

Bingqiang Ji et al.

Summary: In this experiment, we investigated the rising dynamics of oil-coated bubbles in a quiescent water medium. The study found that the oil coating changes the path of the bubble's rise, causing it to undergo zigzagging motion with a steady oscillation pattern at low oil fractions, and damped oscillations at high oil fractions. The forces acting on the bubbles, such as wake-induced lift and drag, decreased with oil fraction and became negligible for bubbles with damped oscillations. This research contributes to our understanding of the behavior of oil-coated bubbles with different oil fractions and viscosities.

Summary: The study found that in high humidity environments, the lifetime of small particles in respiratory droplets is significantly extended, allowing them to be transported much further by turbulent eddies. These findings provide insight into optimizing indoor ventilation and humidity control strategies and are crucial for mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic in the current autumn and upcoming winter.

Summary: Using dynamical scaling analysis, this study predicts the size and speed of ejected droplets within the experimental range of Ohnesorge and Bond numbers, showing a delicate balance in the transient ejection process around a critical Ohnesorge number and sensitivity to initial conditions. The model presented in this study impacts the statistical description of phenomena such as sea spray.

Aerosol agitation: Quantifying the hydrodynamic stressors on particulates encapsulated in small droplets

Oliver McRae et al.

Summary: Lower respiratory tract infections can originate from various aerosol sources, and the survival of pathogens during aerosolization is crucial. Pinch-off processes occurring during aerosolization may accelerate fluid into droplets, potentially damaging biological life. This study calculates the probability of particulates being exposed to hydrodynamic stressors during droplet generation, suggesting aerosol agitation as a potential factor in pathogen transmission.

Statistics of Jet Drop Production

A. Berny et al.

Summary: Based on high fidelity numerical simulations and experimental validation, it is found that the production of jet drops from bursting bubbles is influenced by factors such as bubble size and visco-capillary length. The number and size of the jet drops depend on bubble characteristics, with consideration for temperature variations.

Toilet hygiene-review and research needs

S. E. Abney et al.

Summary: The goal of good toilet hygiene is to minimize pathogen transmission and control odours, which are socially important indicators of cleanliness. While flush toilets have improved hygiene, failure to clean areas within a restroom and poor hand hygiene can still lead to pathogen exposure and odour buildup. Use of automatic toilet bowl cleaners and proper cleaning practices are important in reducing the risks of infection in restrooms.

Oil-coated bubble formation from submerged coaxial orifices

Bingqiang Ji et al.

Summary: Experimental investigation was conducted on the formation of oil-coated bubbles at submerged coaxial orifices in quiescent liquids, revealing significant modification of bubble size due to the presence of the oil phase. A force balance model was developed to predict the oil-coated bubble size, considering orifice geometry and compound air/oil/water interface, which agreed well with experimental results. Dependencies of bubble size on Bond number, orifice size ratio, and interfacial tension ratio of oil-water and oil-air interfaces were discussed for further understanding of bubble formation dynamics with a compound interface.

Experimental evidence of plastic particles transfer at the water-air interface through bubble bursting

Maria Masry et al.

Summary: Plastic debris in the marine environment is extensively studied, and recent literature suggests that microplastics and nanoplastics can be transferred from the marine environment to the atmosphere via air bubble bursting. Experimental results show that the transfer of plastic particles is possible under specific conditions, with factors such as size, water composition, and bubble size influencing the process.
