Strong dependence of the physical properties of cores on spatial resolution in observations and simulations

F. Louvet et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the effects of angular resolution on the derived sizes and masses of sources extracted from observed images. It suggests a linear dependence between the measured sizes and masses of sources and the angular resolution, with implications for the understanding of star formation processes.

The ALPINE-ALMA [CII] survey The contribution of major mergers to the galaxy mass assembly at z ∼ 5

M. Romano et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the importance of major mergers in the early Universe using new data from the ALMA Large Program. Results showed a major merger fraction of about 0.44 (0.34) at z around 4.5 (5.5), with a rapid increase in merger fraction through cosmic time, peaking around z approximately 3 before slowly decreasing.

A Comparison of Star-forming Clumps and Tidal Tails in Local Mergers and High-redshift Galaxies

Debra Meloy Elmegreen et al.

Summary: The CCDG survey investigates the clusters, clumps, dust, and gas in extreme star-forming galaxies through multiwavelength imaging of 13 galaxies within 100 Mpc, revealing insights into the substructure of distant clumps and the potential merger origins of high-redshift galaxies. The study also identifies a power-law cluster magnitude distribution function across galaxies inside and outside clumps, independent of clump surface brightness.

Revisiting the Integrated Star Formation Law. II. Starbursts and the Combined Global Schmidt Law

Robert C. Kennicutt et al.

Summary: We found that the Schmidt law between starburst and nonstarburst galaxies can be fitted with a single power law with a slope of n = 1.5 +/- 0.05. However, fitting separate power laws for nonstarburst and starburst galaxies produces significantly different slopes, with a pronounced offset in the zero-point of the starburst relation towards higher SFR surface densities.

Highly turbulent gas on GMC scales in NGC 3256, the nearest luminous infrared galaxy

Nathan Brunetti et al.

Summary: This study presents the highest resolution CO (2-1) observations obtained to date of NGC 3256, analyzing the detailed properties of the molecular interstellar medium in the central region of this merger. The gas in NGC 3256 may be hotter than in nearby disc galaxies, with majority of the gas appearing unbound and high internal turbulent pressures. Despite lack of significant trends with physical scale, the molecular gas is considered to be a smooth medium down to 55 pc scales, contrasting with the more structured medium found in PHANGS-ALMA disc galaxies.
