Evidence for the Preferential Disruption of Moderately Massive Stars by Supermassive Black Holes

Summary: Tidal disruption events (TDEs) provide a unique opportunity to study the stellar populations around supermassive black holes (SMBHs). By combining light-curve modeling with spectral line information and knowledge about the stellar populations in the host galaxies, we can constrain the properties of the disrupted star and find that SMBHs preferentially disrupt higher mass stars.

Summary: This study presents the first sample of tidal disruption events (TDEs) discovered during the SRG all-sky survey. The X-ray spectra of these events are consistent with critical accretion onto black holes, with potential supercritical accretion in some cases. Optical brightening was observed in four TDEs, while the majority showed no optical activity. The study suggests that X-ray bright events constitute a minority of TDEs, with a detection threshold that can be lowered to potentially detect around 700 TDEs by the end of the survey.

Tidal Disruption Events

Summary: The concept of stars being torn apart and consumed by massive black holes in galaxies fascinated theorists in the late 1970s. Observational evidence for these rare events emerged in the 1990s with the soft X-ray ROSAT All-Sky Survey and has accelerated with advancements in optical time domain surveys. Multiwavelength observations of TDEs have revealed panchromatic emission from different spatial scales, providing important clues to the powering mechanisms of the components.

Whistlers in the Solar Vicinity That Are Spiky in Time and Frequency

Summary: Spiky whistlers, short duration chirps of electric field with fine structures in both frequency and time, have been observed on the Parker Solar Probe for the first time. They seem to be accompanied by low-frequency ion waves and occur relatively frequently, but the origin of these wave pairs and their correlations are not yet understood.
