Natural isoquinoline alkaloids: Pharmacological features and multi-target potential for complex diseases

Erika Plazas et al.

Summary: Complex diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders and cancer pose a significant public health problem. The traditional pharmacotherapy based on a single target has been insufficient, and the emerging multi-target approach shows promise in the search for new drug candidates. Plant-derived isoquinoline alkaloids offer a vast source of multimodal agents with unique structural diversity and a wide range of pharmacological activities. This review provides a comprehensive compilation of the pharmacological relevance and multi-target potential of natural isoquinolines, emphasizing their promising activity in complex diseases.

Exploring the multifocal role of phytochemicals as immunomodulators

Tapan Behl et al.

Summary: The well-functioning immune system of the host body is crucial for maintaining normal physiological and immunological functions, as well as the internal environment. Balancing immunity enhances defense mechanisms against infections, diseases, and unwanted pathogens to prevent hypersensitivity reactions and immune-related diseases. Recent interest in the immune system as a significant target for toxicity has increased due to exposure to chemicals, drugs, and environmental pollutants. Various factors such as sex, age, stress, malnutrition, alcohol, genetic variability, lifestyles, environmental pollutants, and chemotherapy exposure can alter immune responses. Immunomodulation involves modifying immune responses through induction, amplification, attenuation, or inhibition. Phytochemicals, including glycosides, alkaloids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, sterols, and sterolins, play a key role in modulating favorable immune responses.
