Adsorption behavior and mechanism of mixed heavy metal ions by zeolite adsorbent prepared from lithium leach residue

Yingwei Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, zeolite NaA was prepared from lithium leach residue (LLR) using the traditional hydrothermal synthesis method, and its adsorption performance on Pb2+ and Cd2+ in heavy metal wastewater was investigated. The results showed that zeolite NaA exhibited excellent adsorption properties for Pb2+ and Cd2+, and the adsorption process followed the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption mechanism was attributed to ion exchange and hydroxyl groups on the zeolite NaA surface.

Sol-gel derived silica: A review of polymer-tailored properties for energy and environmental applications

Karthikeyan Baskaran et al.

Summary: With the increasing global population, there is a growing demand for high specific surface area (SSA) materials for energy and environmental applications. Silica-based materials with high SSA, such as aerogels, are popular due to their ease of formation, thermal stability, and functionalization, making them suitable for batteries, heavy metal adsorption, and gas capture. However, the weak mechanical behavior of high SSA silica, attributed to its large pore volumes, needs to be improved or modified for these applications. Additionally, the creation of macropores in these mesoporous solids is desirable for membrane applications. This review provides an overview of sol-gel formation and polymer-based tailoring of silica, as well as the applications and challenges associated with polymer-tailored high SSA silica materials in the energy and environmental fields.

Novel iminepyridinium -modified silicas as super-adsorbents for metals ions

Karolina Wieszczycka et al.

Summary: In this study, novel bifunctional iminepyridinium-silicas were fabricated for the effective removal of toxic metals from waste water. The synthesized materials showed high adsorption capacity for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) and demonstrated excellent performance in terms of pH, contact time, and ability to withstand the presence of coexisting ions. Among the materials, MBr-D4IA exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for Pb(II) and Cd(II), while also co-extracting Cu(II) from synthetic waste solutions at a rate of 79%. These findings indicate the potential of these novel adsorbents for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with toxic metals.

Adsorptive membrane for heavy metal removal: Material, fabrication, and performance

C. R. Fadila et al.

Summary: The adsorptive membrane has attracted great attention for its application in high-efficiency separation of heavy metals from wastewater. Natural materials such as chitosan, hydroxyapatite, and cellulose have been used to fabricate the adsorptive membrane, reducing the fabrication cost. Research has shown the effectiveness of adsorptive membranes in removing heavy metals, and efforts are being made to improve the antifouling properties and adsorption capacity. Titanium oxide (TiO2) and chitosan are discovered to exhibit excellent antifouling properties, making them promising materials for adsorptive membranes.

Carbon Quantum Dot-Incorporated Chitosan Hydrogel for Selective Sensing of Hg2+ Ions: Synthesis, Characterization, and Density Functional Theory Calculation

Xiangyu Yan et al.

Summary: A carbon quantum dot-based chitosan hydrogel was prepared as a fluorescence sensor for the selective sensing of Hg2+ ions, demonstrating remarkable sensitivity and selectivity. The hydrogel showed the highest fluorescence intensity and sensitivity at pH 5.0, with a linear response range of 0-100.0 nM and a detection limit of 9.07 nM. The excellent sensing selectivity was attributed to the strong interaction between the hydrogel film and Hg2+ ions, with a higher interaction energy compared to Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions according to density functional theory (DFT) calculation.
