Novel glass capillary microfluidic devices for the flexible and simple production of multi-cored double emulsions

Nico Leister et al.

Summary: This study developed a new device to produce double emulsion droplets with several hundred monodispersed inner droplets using a two-step jet break-up within coaxial capillaries. Monodispersed multicompartment microcapsules were successfully obtained by adjusting the materials and process parameters.

Continuous High-Throughput Fabrication of Architected Micromaterials via In-Air Photopolymerization

Jieke Jiang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates in-air polymerization of liquid jets as a novel platform to produce microparticles and microfibers with tunable size, shape, and composition at high throughput; the size, morphology, and local chemistry of micromaterials can be independently controlled, enabling rapid fabrication of stimuli-responsive Janus fibers and high-throughput printing of microlenses; this combination of rapid processing and tunability opens a new route toward applications of tailored micromaterials in various fields.

Coupling electrohydrodynamics with photopolymerization for microfluidics-based generation of polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) microparticles and hydrogels

Bhargav Krishna Pullagura et al.

Summary: Microfluidics-based methods combined electrohydrodynamics with photopolymerization to generate PEGDA microparticles and hydrogels. By adjusting outer flow rates, applied voltages, and monomer concentrations, precise control over particle and hydrogel sizes were achieved. The application of electric fields inside a 3D hybrid microfluidic device provided additional advantages in terms of device fabrication, continuous operation without clogging, and uniform size distribution.

Expanding Monomers as Anti-Shrinkage Additives

Philipp Marx et al.

Summary: The review highlights the use of expanding monomers as a strategy to overcome volumetric shrinkage during polymerization. These monomers exhibit cyclic or oligocyclic structures that result in volumetric expansion or reduced shrinkage during the ring-opening reaction. The most prominent classes of expanding monomers discussed include cycloalkanes and cycloalkenes, oxacycles, benzoxazines, as well as thiocyclic compounds.

Precise control of synthetic hydrogel network structure via linear, independent synthesis-swelling relationships

N. R. Richbourg et al.

Summary: This study investigates how changes in synthesis conditions affect the network structure of hydrogels, and identifies linear correlations between synthesis variables and swelling behavior. It also demonstrates that complex biopolymer structures can disrupt the linear synthesis-swelling correlations. These findings provide insight into controlling hydrogel physical properties through structural design and can be used to optimize biomedically relevant hydrogels.

Fabrication of Multi-Layered Microspheres Based on Phase Separation for Drug Delivery

He Xia et al.

Summary: In this study, a co-flow microfluidic device was used to generate droplets with different layers due to phase separation. These droplets were polymerized under UV irradiation to obtain microspheres, which showed different release behaviors in simulated bodily fluids. The release rate decreased with an increase in the number of layers, suggesting potential applications in sustained drug release.
