Fullerenes against COVID-19: Repurposing C60 and C70 to Clog the Active Site of SARS-CoV-2 Protease

Tainah Dorina Marforio et al.

Summary: The persistency of COVID-19 and its variants requires new treatments in addition to vaccines. Computational chemistry suggests that fullerenes and carbon nanomaterials have potential as antiviral agents. This study shows that C-60 has strong binding energy to the main protease of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, M-pro, and may be more effective than the known inhibitor masitinib. The use of C-70 as an innovative scaffold for the inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 M-pro is also proposed.

Composite Materials from Renewable Resources as Sustainable Corrosion Protection Coatings

Raluca Sanda Komartin et al.

Summary: New sustainable composites were obtained using epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) and kraft lignin (LnK) through a double-curing procedure involving UV radiation and thermal curing. The study confirmed crosslinked structures using FTIR and investigated thermal degradation behavior, dynamic-mechanic behavior, and water affinity. Results showed that increased LnK content led to better thermal stability and increased Tg values, with excellent corrosion protection efficiency in carbon steel coatings.

Novel Biocompatible with Animal Cells Composite Material Based on Organosilicon Polymers and Fullerenes with Light-Induced Bacteriostatic Properties

Sergey V. Gudkov et al.

Summary: A nanocomposite based on borsiloxane polymer and chemically unmodified fullerenes has been developed, showing self-healing properties and the ability to generate reactive oxygen species under light exposure. It also exhibits antioxidant and bacteriostatic properties, while being non-toxic to eukaryotic cells and suitable for colonization. This versatile material can be used as a reusable dry disinfectant and in prosthetics due to its combination of properties.

Curdlan-Based Hydrogels for Potential Application as Dressings for Promotion of Skin Wound Healing-Preliminary In Vitro Studies

Aleksandra Nurzynska et al.

Summary: The study found that novel curdlan-based hydrogels enriched with Ca2+ ions showed potential as candidates for dressings to accelerate skin wound healing. They demonstrated good structural properties, water absorption capacity, and calcium ion release ability. The Cur_11% biomaterial exhibited the most desirable biological properties in vitro, releasing beneficial calcium ions that enhanced fibroblast viability and proliferation. Further studies in cell culture and in vivo are warranted to determine the precise impact of Cur_11% on skin wound healing.

Water-soluble fullerene derivatives: the inhibition effect on polyol pathway enzymes and antidiabetic potential on high-fat diet/low-dose streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats

Yuliya Soldatova et al.

Summary: The study shows that PFD-7 competitively inhibits enzymes associated with diabetic complications, leading to a decrease in blood glucose level and improvement in organ morphology in rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus. These data indicate the potential of PFD-7 to significantly contribute to the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications.
