Highly selective NH3 gas sensor based on polypyrrole/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites operating at room temperature

Summary: Semiconducting nanomaterials with different sizes and shapes have wide applications in electronics. Recombination of different materials, such as the nanocomposites of polypyrrole (PPy) and MXene, can significantly improve their performance. In this study, PPy/MXene nanocomposites were prepared by a simple in situ polymerization reaction. The sensors made from these nanocomposites showed higher gas sensitivities to ammonia compared to pure PPy and MXene, with excellent selectivity and low detection limit. These findings demonstrate the practicality of PPy/MXene nanocomposites for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

These improved electrochemical performances were attributed to the synergistic effect of pseudocapative material of MnCo2S4, remarkable conductivity of Ti3C2 and CNTs, and the micro-/nano-porous structures constructed by stacking Ti3C2 flakes with CNTs. The Ti3C2/CNTs/MnCo2S4 electrode-based symmetric supercapacitor also demonstrated a high energy density, indicating the substantial enhancement of Ti3C2-based supercapacitors by rational design and modification.

This study visualizes the etching behavior of the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase at the atomic scale and reveals the etching mechanism for the first time. Differences in etching behavior among different etchants were also observed.
