ENIGMA-DTI: Translating reproducible white matter deficits into personalized vulnerability metrics in cross-diagnostic psychiatric research

Peter Kochunov et al.

Summary: The ENIGMA-DTI workgroup investigates the effects of psychiatric, neurological, and developmental disorders on white matter pathways in the human brain. They have identified patterns of white matter deficits in various disorders and demonstrated their reproducibility across different cohorts. Applying the regional vulnerability index (RVI) to individual subjects, they have shown the similarity of deficit patterns among different disorders and discussed the differences between idiopathic schizophrenia and 22q11 deletion syndrome. These findings emphasize the importance of collaborative large-scale research in understanding individual vulnerability and cross-diagnosis features.

A Whole-Brain and Cross-Diagnostic Perspective on Functional Brain Network Dysfunction

Marjolein Spronk et al.

Summary: This study found that while the whole-brain resting-state functional network organization is highly similar across individuals with various mental disorders, subtle differences in network graph distance can predict diagnosis. The results suggest a need to reevaluate neurocognitive theories of mental illness, with a focus on subtle functional brain network changes.

Individual deviations from normative models of brain structure in a large cross-sectional schizophrenia cohort

Summary: The study found widespread brain structural abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia, including reductions in white matter tracts and cortical regions. However, the locations of these structural abnormalities are highly inconsistent between individuals, with most patients not matching the group-consensus pathological maps.

Diffusion tensor imaging in frontostriatal tracts is associated with executive functioning in very preterm children at 9 years of age

Hanna Kallankari et al.

Summary: Preterm birth can disrupt brain maturation and lead to neurocognitive difficulties in high-risk children. Diffusion tensor imaging metrics of frontostriatal tracts were found to correlate with executive functioning, showing higher values in very preterm children compared to those born at term. This study highlights the long-term effects of prematurity on white matter microstructure and executive functioning in children.

Social Cognitive Performance in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders Compared With Autism Spectrum Disorder A Systematic Review, Meta-analysis, and Meta-regression

Lindsay D. Oliver et al.

Summary: The systematic review and meta-analysis found no statistically significant differences in social cognitive performance between individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in emotion processing or theory of mind. Further research with larger samples, consistent reporting, and neuroimaging is needed to confirm these findings and understand shared pathways and heterogeneous aspects across these disorders.

White matter tract signatures of fiber density and morphology in ADHD

Summary: This study utilized FBA to investigate white matter organization in ADHD, revealing reduced white matter connectivity in critical association and projection pathways in children with ADHD. Increased ADHD symptom severity was associated with reduced white matter organization in fronto-pontine fibers.

Summary: The study revealed shared and distinct white matter tract deviations in ASD and ADHD, with potential endophenotypes found in unaffected siblings. White matter tract deviations help clarify within-diagnosis heterogeneity and high between-diagnosis co-occurrence.
