Tightly Constrained Genome Reduction and Relaxation of Purifying Selection during Secondary Plastid Endosymbiosis

Kavitha Uthanumallian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the genomic signature of secondary plastid endosymbiosis, revealing an increase in gene loss associated with this process while showing that essential genes for plastid function are retained. The data also demonstrate a temporary relaxation of purifying selection during secondary endosymbiosis, with selection intensity rebounding to pre-endosymbiosis levels afterwards. Independent endosymbiosis events in different lineages highlight evolutionary contexts and the interplay between selection and drift during organellogenesis.

Similarity-Based Analysis of Allele Frequency Distribution among Multiple Populations Identifies Adaptive Genomic Structural Variants

Marie Saitou et al.

Summary: This study developed a new method to identify potentially adaptive structural variants and discovered hundreds of such variants using various analytical approaches. The study also revealed the associations of these variants with genotype frequency, coding sequences, and GWAS traits, and introduced new evolutionary models to explain the complexity of structural variant evolution.

Genome structural variation in human evolution

Edward J. Hollox et al.

Summary: Structural variation (SV) refers to large differences in genomic structure between two genomes, including both copy number variations and variations that do not change copy number, such as inversions. Recent advances in reference genomes and sequencing technologies have renewed interest in SV research, highlighting its role in human evolution. Studies have shown the impact of SV on changes in human brain, population-specific responses to the environment, and contributions from archaic hominin admixture to present-day human SV.

Demodex: a skin resident in man and his best friend

R. Foley et al.

Summary: Demodex mites are microscopic arachnids that can be found in the normal skin of many mammals, causing skin conditions like rosacea in humans and demodicosis in dogs. The interactions between the host's immune system and Demodex mites play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of these diseases, although it is not fully understood.

Evolutionary Transformations of the Metazoan Body Plan: Genomic-Morphogenetic Correlations

V. V. Isaeva et al.

Summary: This review summarizes literature data on phylogenomics and identifies correlations between genomic-morphogenetic relationships that determine the metazoan body plan and phenotypic complexity. It reveals that radical macroevolutionary transformations of the bilaterian body plan are often associated with duplications or losses of individual Hox genes or with topological reorganization. Regressive evolution is common in Metazoa, with frequent reduction and simplification of the genome and phenome. The cluster Hox genes system is shown to be a key regulatory node in genome-phenome relationships, influencing a wide range of developmental processes and different evolutionary trajectories of various bilaterian taxa.

Novel insights into the evolution of genome size and AT content in mollusks

Kenta Adachi et al.

Summary: The genome size (C-value) of a species is an important characteristic closely related to organism evolution. Our study suggests a potential positive correlation between AT content and C-value in the cephalopods lineages, and a negative correlation in the gastropod lineages. The reduction of C-value in the Bivalvia lineage is unlikely due to selective deletion of AT-rich regions.

A bird-like genome from a frog: Mechanisms of genome size reduction in the ornate burrowing frog, Platyplectrum ornatum

Sangeet Lamichhaney et al.

Summary: The study of the genome of the ornate burrowing frog from Australia reveals four major mechanisms driving reduction in genome size, including decreased abundance of transposable elements, increased net deletion bias in TEs, drastic reduction in intron lengths, and expansion of TE-suppressing Piwi genes. Transcriptomes from multiple tissues confirm these results and provide insights into sex-differentiation pathways in Platyplectrum. The genome offers a model for future comparative studies on genome size reduction mechanisms in amphibians and vertebrates.

Neutralism versus selectionism: Chargaff's second parity rule, revisited

Donald R. Forsdyke

Summary: The functional interpretation of Chargaff's second parity rule (PR2) on DNA base frequencies is controversial. Evidence from a novel technology supports the hypothesis that base order plays a role in initiating recombination within species. The findings confirm the contribution of base composition to nucleic acid folding energy.

Relaxed selection underlies genome erosion in socially parasitic ant species

Lukas Schrader et al.

Summary: Inquiline ants are highly specialized and obligate social parasites that have distinct genetic erosion compared to their closely-related hosts, likely due to reduced social behavioral repertoires. This parallel gene loss, particularly in olfactory receptors, suggests a relaxed selection for cooperative colony life in the socially parasitic species.
