Lithium extraction from brine by an asymmetric hybrid capacitor composed of heterostructured lithium-rich cathode and nano-bismuth anode

Xiaoyu Zhao et al.

Summary: Efficient extraction of lithium resources from brine at a low cost is crucial for addressing energy and environmental issues. Two advances were proposed in this study: the design of a layered-spinel heterostructure lithium-rich material (LSNCM) as a Li-insertion electrode, and the preparation of nanocrystalline bismuth (ncBi) as a selective Cl- storage electrode. Both methods showed high extraction efficiency and stability, making them promising for lithium extraction.

Membrane Materials for Selective Ion Separations at the Water-Energy Nexus

Ryan M. DuChanois et al.

Summary: This article evaluates the ion selectivity of conventional polymeric membrane materials and describes recent progress in enhancing selective transport through tailored free volume elements and ion-membrane interactions. To overcome the limitations of polymeric membranes, three material classes - porous crystalline materials, 2D materials, and discrete biomimetic channels - are highlighted as possible candidates for ion-selective membranes due to their molecular-level control over physical and chemical properties. Finally, research directions and critical challenges for developing bioinspired membranes with molecular recognition are provided.

Simple and Rapid Preparation of MIL-121 with Small Particles for Lithium Adsorption from Brine

Qinyan Wei et al.

Summary: A novel method for generating aluminum-based MOF material MIL-121 was investigated, which showed lower energy consumption and better environmental friendliness compared to the hydrothermal method. The novel method also demonstrated advantages in scaling up for industrialized production. The study also explored the formation mechanism of MIL-121 crystals, showing that temperature and additives influenced the size and morphology of the crystals, and the thermal stability of the material obtained by the novel method was better than that obtained by the hydrothermal method.
