Some studies on dissimilar welds joint P92 steel and Inconel 617 alloy for AUSC power plant application

Amit Kumar et al.

Summary: This study presents the microstructure evolution of a gas tungsten arc welded (GTAW) dissimilar joint of P92 steel and Inconel 617 alloy. The effect of post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) on mechanical properties and microstructure was investigated. The formation of an unmixed zone at the interface led to poor tensile properties of the welded joint. PWHT significantly improved the impact toughness of the weld metal.

Experimental investigation on microstructure, mechanical properties, and residual stresses of dissimilar welded joint of martensitic P92 and AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel

Gaurav Dak et al.

Summary: This study examined the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of martensitic steel P92 and AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel dissimilar metal weld, revealing the presence of various zones and secondary phases. Post weld heat treatment was found to homogenize the microstructure, while welding residual stresses decreased after PWHT. The mechanical tests indicated that the weld joint toughness was lower compared to the base metals, with ICHAZ being the weakest zone among all regions.

Study on evaluation of through-thickness residual stresses and microstructure-mechanical property relation for dissimilar welded joint of modified 9Cr-1Mo and SS304H steel

S. Sirohi et al.

Summary: Gas Tungsten Arc Welded dissimilar joint of modified 9Cr-1Mo (P91) and SS304H steel plate using Ni-based ERNiCrCoMo-1 super alloy filler, post-weld heat treated at 760 degrees C for 2 h, revealed that improper mixing of filler materials can result in an unmixed zone formation near the weld metal and HAZ interface, leading to variations in mechanical properties such as hardness, residual stress, and impact energy along the weldments.

Residual stress distribution in thick double-V butt welds with varying groove configuration, restraints and mechanical tensioning

P. K. Taraphdar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of different weld groove configurations on residual stresses in thick multipass high strength low alloy steel butt-welds. Findings show that using an unequal-V groove joint can effectively reduce residual stress levels in the bottom half of the weld, while a restrained welding condition with a single directional weld pass sequence may have a negative impact on residual stress intensity. Mechanical tensioning technique can help reduce transverse residual stress levels in the weld zone and vicinity.
