Mechanisms of austenite growth during intercritical annealing in medium manganese steels

Rama Srinivas Varanasi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanisms of austenite growth in medium manganese steel, providing evidence of manganese transport to austenite through grain boundary diffusion, grain boundary migration, and dislocation pipe diffusion. Furthermore, the influence of grain boundary misorientation on austenite growth is also reported.

Effect of Intercritical Annealing on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of 0.1C-13Cr-3Ni Martensitic Stainless Steel

Jaka Burja et al.

Summary: Introducing intercritical annealing in martensitic stainless steel can improve the Charpy impact toughness and reduce the deviation in its values by dissolving carbide films and preventing their re-occurrence. However, intercritical annealing results in lower strength and hardness in martensite, while refining the martensitic microstructure.

Laboratory- and Semi-Industrial-Scale Thermomechanical Processing of TRIP-Aided Steel with Acicular Ferrite

Summary: By modifying the deformation and cooling methods, it is possible to increase the proportion of retained austenite in Si-Al TRIP-aided steel, leading to improved mechanical properties. Controlled thermomechanical processing can result in obtaining acicular ferrite and a high fraction of retained austenite in the steel.

Austenite formation and cementite dissolution during intercritical annealing of a medium-manganese steel from a martensitic condition

J. J. Mueller et al.

Summary: In this study, through experiments and simulations, the microstructure evolution of Fe-0.19C-4.39Mn steel during intercritical annealing was investigated, revealing that the generation of austenite during intercritical annealing may not be solely preserved in the initial martensitic microstructure, but possibly generated through nucleation and growth of new austenite.

The In Situ Observation of Phase Transformations During Intercritical Annealing of a Medium Manganese Advanced High Strength Steel by High Energy X-Ray Diffraction

Xiaohua Hu et al.

Summary: The microstructural changes in a medium manganese steel during thermal processing were evaluated using HEXRD, showing that the 30-min hold time was insufficient to reach equilibrium conditions and the austenite fraction increased during isothermal holding. The observed changes in lattice parameters were interpreted to be caused by the redistribution of C and Mn between austenite and ferrite.
