Glenohumeral joint dynamics and shoulder muscle activity during geared manual wheelchair propulsion on carpeted floor in individuals with spinal cord injury

Omid Jahanian et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of using geared wheels on glenohumeral joint dynamics and shoulder muscle activity during manual wheelchair propulsion. The findings showed that using low gear resulted in decreased propulsion speed and stroke distance, as well as reduced shoulder loading and muscle activity. Therefore, the usage of geared wheels may enhance independent mobility and decrease shoulder demands for wheelchair users.

The Accurate Assessment of Muscle Excitation Requires the Detection of Multiple Surface Electromyograms

Taian Martins Vieira et al.

Summary: When sampling EMGs with one pair of electrodes, it is not sufficient to assume that the detected signal reflects the net muscle excitation. Multiple EMG detections and consideration of electrode-fiber alignment are necessary for accurate assessment of muscle excitation. It is advisable to exercise caution when drawing inferences from individually collected EMGs.

A high sample rate, wireless instrumented wheel for measuring 3D pushrim kinetics of a racing wheelchair

Felix Chenier et al.

Summary: The study presented an instrumented wheel that measures pushrim kinetics at a high sample rate of 2500 Hz, revealing continuous increase in total force during acceleration and stable tangential force. However, counterproductive tangential force was observed at higher speeds. The instrumented wheel has great value for coaches and athletes, as well as potential for further research on wheelchair racing biomechanics and injury prevention.
