Molecular Monitoring of Knockdown Resistance in Head Louse (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) Populations in Iran

Fereshteh Ghahvechi Khaligh et al.

Summary: This study investigated head lice specimens from various provinces in Iran, identifying six new and one old kdr haplotypes within the population. Additionally, new amino acid substitutions were reported in head lice for the first time. The study found that 51% of head lice collected in Iran carried only the P813H allele, indicating active selective pressure on the populations.

Frequency of pyrethroid resistance in human head louse treatment: systematic review and meta-analysis

Jalal Mohammadi et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis of head louse populations worldwide from 2000 to 2021 found an estimated mean frequency of 76.9% for pyrethroid resistance. Within this resistant population, 64.4% were homozygote and 30.3% were heterozygote resistant. Four countries (Australia, England, Israel, and Turkey) had 100% kdr gene frequencies, potentially rendering pyrethrin- and pyrethroid-based pediculicides ineffective.
