Role of outer layer configuration on saline concentration sensitivity of optical fiber probe coated with ZnO/Ag nano-heterostructure

Summary: Accurate monitoring of concentration changes in saline solution is critical for controlling and mitigating the negative effects of salt in water resources. A highly sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor was fabricated by coating a novel zinc oxide/silver (ZnO/Ag) bi-layer with different ZnO nanostructure shapes on partially unclad silica fiber. The experiment demonstrated that vertically oriented ZnO nanorods sample exhibited superior sensitivity due to its larger surface area, better crystallinity, and greater adhesion with salt molecules.
