Dopant-free materials for carrier-selective passivating contact solar cells: A review

Shiladitya Acharyya et al.

Summary: This review article provides an overview of dopant-free materials used as carrier-selective layers in c-Si or poly-Si solar cells. The focus is on transition metal oxides (TMOs) that possess a wide range of band structures and exhibit carrier selective properties. These materials have the advantage of being fabricated at low temperatures, making them more attractive than doped Si layers which require toxic materials and/or high temperatures for their formation. The article also discusses various silicon solar cells fabricated with dopant-free carrier selective TMOs by different research groups, along with their photovoltaic performance. Different passivation schemes using these materials are also explored.

High-performance hole-selective V2OX/SiOX/NiOX contact for crystalline silicon solar cells

Guanlin Du et al.

Summary: This study improves the hole-selectivity of vanadium oxide (V2OX) by combining it with nickel oxide (NiOX) and suppressing the undesirable interfacial reaction using an ultrathin silicon oxide (SiOX) interlayer. The optimized V2OX/SiOX/NiOX rear contact achieves a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 22.03%.

MoOx work function, interface structure, and thermal stability analysis of ITO/MoOx/a-Si(i) stacks for hole-selective silicon heterojunction solar cells

Mallem Kumar et al.

Summary: This study thoroughly investigated the work function and thermal stability of MoOx, as well as its impact on the performance of MoOx SHJ solar cells. The results show that MoOx is an efficient and convenient alternative emitter material for Si solar cells. Optimized processing parameters for MoOx pave the way for more efficient SHJ solar cells.

Solution-processed molybdenum oxide films by low-temperature annealing for improved silicon surface passivation

Jun Chen et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that depositing MoOx films on the silicon surface can significantly improve the passivation quality of silicon, and further improvement can be achieved through annealing. Due to the excellent performance of the MoOx film, it may serve as an effective and low-cost carrier-selective passivating contact material.

On the application of hole-selective MoOx as full-area rear contact for industrial scale p-type c-Si solar cells

Hisham Nasser et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of integrating substoichiometric molybdenum oxide as a hole-selective rear contact into industrial scale p-type crystalline silicon solar cells, achieving a peak efficiency of 17.65% by depositing MoOx thin films directly on p-type c-Si. Additionally, a comprehensive loss analysis of a MoOx/p-type Si heterojunction solar cell is conducted for the first time using Quokka simulation software, defining dominant loss mechanisms and exploring a roadmap for achieving the highest possible efficiency from industrial scale p-type c-Si solar cells with full-area MoOx hole-collecting rear contact.
