Formation mechanism of CuNiAl-rich multi-structured precipitation and its effect on mechanical properties for ultra-high strength low carbon steel obtained via direct quenching and tempering process

Wen Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructural transformation and precipitation behavior of CuNiAl-rich particles under the influence of the direct quenching and tempering (DQ-T) process. The results showed that the high-density dislocations formed during the DQ process provided numerous nucleation sites for the CuNiAl-rich particles. Phase field method simulation revealed the coarsening mechanisms and formation of 9R-B2 core-shell structural particles. The yield strength of the steel was increased due to co-precipitation, while retaining good toughness.

Improvement of Cu-rich precipitation strengthening for high-strength low carbon steel strengthened via Ti-microalloying

Wen Fu et al.

Summary: This study aims to enhance the precipitation strengthening of nanoscale Cu-rich particles in high-strength low carbon steel through Ti microalloying. The addition of Ti increased the density of small-angle boundaries and dislocations, leading to more nucleation sites and refined Cu-rich particle dimensions. The refinement of Cu-rich particles transformed their structure into semi-coherent phases, which reduced the mismatch degree with the alpha-Fe matrix and increased the precipitation strengthening.

Refinement of Cu-M2C precipitates and improvement of strength and toughness by Ti microalloying in a Cu-bearing steel

L. Y. Kan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of Ti microalloying on the refinement of Cu and M2C carbides in an ultrahigh-strength Fe0.05C-1.3Cu steel, leading to improved strength and toughness. Results showed that Ti-containing steel had higher yield strength and impact toughness compared to Ti-free steel due to a higher density of Cu and M2C carbides co-precipitation. The enhancement in precipitation strengthening from Cu-M2C precipitates in Ti-containing steel was calculated to be 69 MPa higher than that in Ti-free steel, with high toughness attributed to a smaller prior austenite grain size and higher density of high angle grain boundaries deflecting crack propagation.

Enhancement of Cu nano-precipitation by Al addition in a Cu-Ni bearing low alloy steel

X. Q. Rong et al.

Summary: The addition of Al in the Fe-2Cu-1.5Mn-1.5Ni alloy was found to enhance Cu nucleation in the matrix and on dislocations, leading to a significant increase in hardness. The higher dislocation density in Al-containing steel may be attributed to a larger number of Cu particles delaying the recovery and annihilation of dislocations in the martensite matrix. Additionally, the concentrations of Cu and Mn in Cu clusters were lower, while those of Al and Ni were higher than the values of both metastable equilibrium bcc-Cu and equilibrium fcc-Cu phases.

Precipitation behavior in boundaries and its influence on impact toughness in 22Cr25Ni3W3CuCoNbN steel during short-term ageing

You Li et al.

Summary: In the study, the 22Cr25Ni3W3CuCoNbN steel was aged at 700 degrees C for up to 1000 h, during which the grain size remained stable. The impact toughness decreased significantly at the early ageing stage due to rapid precipitation of M23C6 carbides at grain boundaries. The twin structure was found to be beneficial for increasing impact toughness, with coherent twins dispersing impact force and incoherent twins reducing carbide precipitation at grain boundaries.

The synergistic effects of ultrafine grains and nano-size Cu-rich precipitates on the mechanical properties of DP steels

Xueyun Gao et al.

Summary: The simultaneous improvement in strength and ductility of ferrite/martensite dual-phase (DP) steels was studied by investigating the synergistic effects of ultrafine grains and nano Cu-rich precipitates. Through experimental methods and simulations, it was found that a 75% reduction in warm deformation resulted in finer grains and higher tensile strength, with an optimal mechanical properties of yield strength of 876 +/- 13 MPa, tensile strength of 976 +/- 15 MPa, and total elongation of 15.2%. Additionally, the precipitation of nano Cu-rich precipitates contributed to an increase in strength of approximately 300 MPa.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of quenching, tempering, and deep cryogenic treatment on the microstructure and impact toughness of a new tungsten-molybdenum high-speed steel produced by powder metallurgy. It was found that the microstructure mainly consisted of martensite, M6C, and VC, with different treatments affecting the impact toughness of the material. The characteristics of martensite and grain refinement were identified as key factors influencing impact toughness.

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel and concise method is proposed to define the effective average grain size of medium Mn steel with lath-typed microstructure, based on the mechanism of dislocation pile-up. The yield strength of lath-typed microstructure shows excellent consistency with the Hall-Petch relationship of granular microstructure, indicating the feasibility of the proposed method. Additionally, the effect of grain size on the mechanical properties is also investigated.

Improvement of mechanical properties for low carbon ultra-high strength steel strengthened by Cu-rich multistructured precipitation via modification to bainite

Chengning Li et al.

Summary: This study focused on ultra-high strength steel strengthened by Cu-rich multistructured precipitates and toughened by bainite. A Cr-Mo bearing bainitic steel exhibited better strength and toughness compared with ferritic steel. Cu-rich multistructured particles and (Nb, Ti)C particles were found to be the two main precipitation phases in this bainitic steel.
